Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.Position Overview:We are hiring research assistants to collect data on endangered bat species in Canada.
Projects include radiotracking bats at maternity colonies and caves/mines scattered throughout Manitoba and Ontario. You will be maintaining equipment, capturing, measuring, radiotracking, and releasing bats.You will primarily be camping or in cabins and away from Winnipeg for periods of 3-6 weeks at a time.Duties:
  • Prepare field equipment supplies for field research
  • Distribution, monitoring and maintenance of acoustic and microchip monitors
  • Field research such as bat counts, radiotracking, capturing and measuring bats
  • Assisting with data organization, management, and analysis
  • Outreach activities such as presentations, both online and in person
Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled or completed degree in biology or related major
  • Experience with camping and hiking
  • Experience handling bats
  • Proficiency with Microsoft word, excel and powerpoint
  • Class 5 drivers license
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends, potentially away from Winnipeg for extended periods of time (Up to 6 weeks at a time)
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to work alone and in a group
  • Great communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Highly motivated and ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Rabies Vaccination
Condition(s) of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
