We place considerable focus on a culture that nurtures imagination in an atmosphere where people are free to perform to their fullest potential in an open and friendly environment.The TeamThe Pason Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) team is a group of two managers and three coordinators. All have extensive knowledge and experience in the the business, having transitioned from operations into the HSE team. This Director position will be responsible for the corporate safety activities including board reports, safety programs rollout, and strategic direction, in addition to the management of all HSE employees. Two Houston-based managers are responsible for the field aspect of our completions division, and for the drilling division, along with one Houston-based coordinator. The other coordinators are Calgary-based and responsible for our manufacturing activities in Calgary and our head office safety. The team collaborates as colleagues to ensure consistency and standardization, in addition to local safety leads in Pason’s international operations. The HSE group provides advice in relation to planning, developing, implementing and leading safety programs and practices across Pason. The team supports the HSE programs and practices, with a goal to ensure the activities of Pason are carried out in a safe and efficient manner while posing minimal impact on the well-being of employees, contractors or the environment.The RoleThe Director, HS&E will provide health and safety leadership in relation to planning, developing and implementing preventative and remedial programs and practices, to ensure that the Company’s field and office activities are carried out in a safe manner and pose minimum impact for the health and well-being of employees, contractors, stakeholders or the environment. Pason has adopted the SIF (Serious Incident and Fatality) framework to focus resources on the most significant safety risks.This role is Calgary based and the successful candidate should expect to travel ~25% of the time, predominantly, to field locations throughout Western Canada and the United States.The position reports to the VP, Operations, and will work closely with operations managers throughout the Business Units, and as well as Pason’s Corporate Head Office, R&D, technical support, and other office-based support staff). Additionally, the successful candidate will collaborate and liaise regularly with the HS&E leads in Pason’s international business units.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assess and further develop occupational safety elements for an integrated HS&E management system, including preparation and dissemination of all relevant documentation, development of appropriate safety standards, reporting and information and emergency response management
  • Understand, promote and adhere to all relevant health, safety and environmental regulations and policies in undertaking all activities.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies to ensure Pason is compliant with and meets all mandatory health, safety and environmental requirements
  • Represent Pason at industry functions and working groups to promote Pason’s HS&E interests
  • Proactively keep up to date with all latest developments and new legislation and maintain a working knowledge of all the health, safety and environmental legislation and any developments which affect Pason’s business activities
  • Work with all employees to promote a culture of continuous HS&E improvement; develop and implement practical and effective programs, both preventative and remedial, promoting health and safety and safe working practices
  • Lead in-house training with managers and employees regarding key HS&E issues and ensure HS&E is a priority for all team members
  • Develop, implement, evaluate, and provide management and administrative support of company HS&E policies and procedures such as: Permit to Work; Systems Auditing; Emergency Response; Drug and Alcohol Testing
  • Develop and promote an HS&E component to product design with Pason’s R&D department
  • Develop and manage a HS&E screening process for new field hiring
  • Ensure a consistent approach to HS&E across all Canadian work locations
  • Ensure Pason Canada understands and complies with all external audit requirements such as COR

  • Demonstrated exceptional verbal and written communication skills that clearly convey information and ideas
  • Successful at quickly developing credibility among a field-based oil services workforce
  • Pragmatic and principled when it comes to safety protocols
  • Experience in Power BI and data analysis to the extent needed to understand trends and motivate behaviour changes
  • An energetic self starter, who takes initiative, owns functional responsibility, establishes strong working relationships and is adaptable to growing and changing environments
  • A team player, whose natural style is to collaborate, be responsive and places personal agendas secondary to the needs of the organization
  • Willingness, ability, and comfort to travel to field locations
Experience
  • Minimum 5 years related HSE experience in a field-service business environment, preferably in oil and gas
  • Experience providing support and guidance to a de-centralized field-based workforce
  • Demonstrated success establishing systems and processes in a fast-paced customer-service business environment
  • Success using safety statistics as both leading and lagging indicators to motivate behaviour changes
  • Experience dealing with industry specific (oil services related) third party audit groups
  • Familiarity and experience with vendor qualification protocols and customer audits
  • Awareness and knowledge of relevant governmental regulations (WCB, OHS, OSHA, MMS, USCG, NOPSA, etc.).
Education
  • Diploma or degree from an accredited college, university or technical school in a relevant discipline
  • Safety Professional (CSP) certification is a plus, but is not required if the individual is willing to work towards it during employment with Pason
  • Specialized training in safety and occupational health would be a preference and asset
