- Provide leadership, technical support and guidance to corporate and mine employees on environmental issues.
- Provide strategic advice on environmental risks.
- Represent the company on environmental matters on external committees with Indigenous Nations and government agencies.
- Collaborate with environmental scientists, engineers, and external parties such as Indigenous Nations, government agencies, and industry groups to promote environmental initiatives.
- Establish/Implement environmental policies, operating procedures and internal and external reporting processes.
- Assist in identification of potential environmental risks/impacts and develop action plans to mitigate.
- Provide leadership and strategic guidance to senior management on environmental issues and opportunities.
- Lead the creation and implementation of environmental specific goals, metrics, and action plans to drive environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and corporate and mine site governance.
- Monitor environmental performance and review environmental reporting and make recommendations from time to time on how such reporting can be improved and implement such recommendations.
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and documentation to communicate findings and recommendations, while reducing reliance on external resources/consultants.
- Identify and action opportunities to reduce costs or improve efficiency by amending permits or management plans.
- Analyze and optimize existing processes to reduce waste, energy consumption, water requirements and carbon emissions.
- Lead and foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement and measurable outcomes.
- Build effective working relationships with all stakeholders including regulatory bodies, government groups, local communities and First Nations, along with site and corporate colleagues.
- At least 10 years of experience in working with the environmental aspects of mines, preferably with experience in mine water management, technical environmental, environmental compliance programs and regulatory approvals.
- A Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or a combination of education and experience could be considered.
- Candidates with a professional BC designation such as PEng, PGeo, RPBio are strongly preferred
- Knowledge of the various technical processes associated with a mining/process operation and implementation of industry standard environmental mitigation measures required. Experience in both a site-based and corporate environmental roles.
- Strong communication, project management, technical writing and presentation skills, particularly in presenting technical information in plain language
- Proven track record of effective teamwork, organizational development and leadership.
- Knowledge of BC and Canadian environmental assessment legislation, BC Mines Act, BC Water Sustainability Act, BC Environmental Management Act, federal Fisheries Act, or other applicable legislation is an asset
- Ability to gain stakeholder cooperation and support through discussion and negotiations
- Must hold a valid driver’s license and able to travel throughout the region including periodic overnight stays as required
- Must be able to work out of Vancouver Corporate office full time, but frequent travel to the Blackwater Mine is expected.
