- Perform field and laboratory quality assurance testing on municipal construction and maintenance projects to verify material compliance
- Oversee temporary Materials Technical Assistants, including organizing daily activities, providing feedback, and assisting with training
- Conduct density testing, materials sampling, and nuclear gauge testing in accordance with CSA and ASTM specifications
- Calibrate and maintain testing equipment to ensure laboratory accreditation is upheld
- Prepare and review accurate test reports, graphs, and summary data for approval
- Provide basic technical advice and interpretation of City specifications to contractors and project managers
- Conduct inspections of construction sites and production facilities to ensure compliance with standards
- Participate in research and development programs related to new materials and engineering methods
- Perform other related duties as assigned
- Completion of a two-year diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or a related field from a recognized institute of technology
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in density testing, proctors, aggregate testing, and related materials testing in lab and field environments
- Eligibility to be recognized as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with ASET, with the requirement to obtain the designation within one year
- Possession of a valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License (or provincial equivalent) and eligibility for a City of Edmonton Driving Permit
- CCIL certification for Aggregate testing or the ability to obtain it within two (2) months of starting
- Working knowledge of computer software and data acquisition systems
- Experience working within an audited laboratory program or field accreditation program
- Previous experience supervising or leading small technical teams
- Strong technical knowledge of density, standard/modified proctor testing, and sampling procedures
- Ability to work independently and as a self-starter to lead a team and interact effectively with community partners and the public
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to provide precise technical instructions
- Astute problem-solving skills, particularly regarding material deficiencies and field problems
- Ability to read and interpret complex technical plans, diagrams, and specifications
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations and a commitment to safe work practices

- Ability to maintain CCIL, CSA, AASHTO, and ASTM certification requirements as needed
- Willingness to work flexible shifts or overtime as required by construction schedules
- Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and coveralls
- Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) or higher
- Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
- Successful candidates will be required to provide a current 5 year driver's abstract
- A minimum of two (2) years driving experience holding at least a Class 5 drivers' license in any province/country (including GDLs or equivalents)
- Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring
- Applicants will be tested
- This role involves heavy effort, including lifting up to 100 lbs and performing physical tasks like climbing, crouching, and crawling
- Demonstrated ability to perform field and lab activities, including heavy lifting of equipment and samples up to 50 kg, 20 to 30 times per day, and repetitive bending in all weather, traffic, and construction conditions
- You will be exposed to various environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, precipitation, dust, and noise
- Fieldwork involves working near heavy traffic, construction equipment, and potential hazards like radiation (from nuclear gauges) or silica dust
- Safety equipment such as steel-toed boots, hard hats, and respiratory protection is required
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance
- Due to the nature of this work, this position is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement
