Please log in to verify your internal candidate status.This position has an end date of May 2, 2027.Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.Reporting to the Senior Pathology Core Technician, the Medical Laboratory Technologist independently performs technical histology procedures in support of clinical and research activities within the Laboratory Medicine & Pathology unit. This position is responsible for the preparation, processing, staining, and quality control of human and animal tissue specimens for microscopic examination and diagnostic interpretation by Pathologists. The role ensures compliance with professional standards, regulatory requirements, and laboratory quality assurance protocols, while supporting teaching, research, collaboration, and interdepartmental coordination.Responsibilities:Histology and Diagnostic Slide Preparation:
  • Prepares sections of human/animal tissue for microscopic examination and patient
diagnosis, using techniques to embed (orientate specimen in paraffin blocks), section (cutting sections of tissue}, stain (enhance contrast of tissue and highlight specific features of interest with routine hematoxylin and eosin stains). and mount tissue (adhere tissue onto glass slides), from surgical procedures. * Performs recuts and additional stains including special stains, as requested by Pathologist or by Supervising Technician.
  • Operates computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by Pathologist.
  • May label requisitions, specimen containers, cassettes and/or slides and affixes coverslip to slides.
  • Distributes blocks, slides and Pathology requisitions.
Quality Control, Troubleshooting and Equipment Maintenance:
  • Formulates initial diagnosis of procedural and technical problems, escalates to supervising technician as necessary
  • Examines slides and/or blocks to ensure tissue preparation is meeting laboratory requirements.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment and tracks all routine maintenance and quality controls performed.
  • Operates, cleans, and sterilizes laboratory equipment, glassware, instruments, and workstation.
Safety, Compliance and Regulatory Adherence:
  • Disposes of hazardous chemical waste per regulatory guidelines.
  • Maintains strictest confidentiality.
  • Complies with all Provincial, Federal, professional regulations as well as University and departmental rules, policies, and procedural manuals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Teaching and Technical Support:
  • Trains or directs Medical Laboratory Science students engaged in laboratory testing and techniques
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in the field of Laboratory Science
  • Must be registered and hold a valid MLT General Practice Permit with CMLTA.
Knowledegeable with:
  • Specimen processing and embedding
  • Paraffin and frozen sections
  • H&E staining
  • Immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence
  • Familiar with advanced histology techniques such as special histochemical stains (including AFB, AB2.5,
Congo Red, Bielschowsky, Gram, GMS, LFB, MSB, Movat, PAS, PASD, Prussian Blue, Reticulin,
Trichrome, EVG, Von Kossa, Warthin Starry)Experienced with:
  • Digital slide scanning (Aperio ScanScope CS, Olympus VS200)
  • RNA extraction
  • NanoString nCounter analysis
  • Organized, with strong attention to detail and accuracy; ability to work with minimal direction.
  • Preferred candidates will have at least 6 months of experience in a histological/pathology lab.
