What is Toronto Summer Music?Toronto Summer Music (TSM) is Canada’s flagship summer classical music festival, recently named by BBC Music Magazine as one of the “Best Classical Music Festivals in North America.” Each summer, TSM brings together leading artists and emerging musicians from Canada, the United States, and beyond, fostering meaningful cross-border artistic exchange through performance, mentorship, and education. With a strong commitment to artistic excellence, international collaboration, and public access—nearly half of its programming is free. What does our Board do?Our Board is a governance and fund-raising Board. It is responsible for setting TSM’s strategy, supporting its artistic mission, ensuring good governance, building revenue, and ensuring expenses are managed within a conservative fiscal framework. Members are ambassadors to the music community and our link to audiences, music educators, cultural organizations, and amateur and professional musicians in Canada and internationally. The Board meets 4 to 6 times annually. Members participate in committees such as governance and development, and activities such as Strategic Planning. The Board works with a dedicated, high-performing team that includes Artistic Director Will Fedkenheuer. What makes a great TSM Board member? Our Board members are passionate about chamber music and the music community. Many are amateur musicians, and all are accomplished professionals with careers in law, finance and accounting, business, and education. They share a deep commitment to TSM values and the TSM mission. Each Board member contributes according to their strengths — helping shape organizational strategy, uphold strong governance, support fundraising efforts, and serve as ambassadors for our mission. Board members give generously within their means and actively participate in thoughtful discussion and decision-making within the Board’s governance responsibilities, while respecting the distinct roles of staff and artistic leadership.Serving on the Board of TSM is a remarkably rewarding experience. When the Festival comes around in July, our Board members enjoy attending concerts and social events that make our Festival so exciting. They see the impact of their work through the delight that TSM brings to its audience. The Board takes pride in TSM’s commitment to provide unique performing, coaching, and learning opportunities to a remarkable roster of professional musicians, emerging professionals, and amateurs. Our organization has fostered many promising young musicians as they embark on national and international careers.
