We offer traditional and co-op undergraduate programs (including a biomedical co-op option), as well as Master of Engineering, Master of Science, and PhD graduate programs.Position SummaryProfessor Amit Kumar, Canada Research Chair in Assessment of Energy Systems (Tier-1) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta. invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow/Research Associate position.The successful candidate will join an active group of researchers working in the areas of energy and environmental systems engineering supported by industry and government. The successful candidate will also have an opportunity to contribute to the multi-country collaborative projects focused on addressing the challenges of future energy systems. This position will also allow the candidate to work collaboratively with the decision-makers in developing information for investment decision making and policy formulation.The position is initially for two years and has the possibility of being extended. The position is available immediately and the applications will be reviewed as received. Given the high volume of applicants, only those of interest will be contacted by our office.Opportunity for Specialized Training & Skills DevelopmentThe candidate will have opportunities to participate in national and international conferences and financial support will be provided. The candidate will also have an opportunity to develop and initiate new research activities in relevant areas and supervise junior researchers. The candidate could have an opportunity to teach relevant courses in engineering based on their background in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.Description of the PositionThe position focuses on the modeling of decarbonization pathways for fossil fuel-based energy conversion systems, specifically in the conversion and processing of oil and natural gas to other forms of energy and carbon capture storage and utilization. We are looking for an individual with research experience in the area of energy and environmental systems engineering. Individuals applying for this position should have an interest and research experience in process modeling.Duties
  • Conduct research in the decarbonization of energy pathways
  • Develop process models of energy conversion pathways
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Prepare technical reports for industrial and government partners
  • Contribute to the preparation of proposals for funding agencies
  • Work with junior students on various research projects
  • Contribute to the research group as needed
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in a relevant engineering discipline with an emphasis on energy systems
  • Prior experience developing process models for the estimation of the viability of energy systems
  • Some experience in modeling tools (e.g., Aspen Plus)
  • Proven ability to work independently
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; proficiency in English
  • Open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and foreign students
Preferred Qualifications
  • Research experience in the area of energy and environmental systems engineering
