*This is an 18-month term position*The University of Winnipeg is a comprehensive research university with a strong culture of research, scholarship, creativity, and innovation that spans the sciences, social sciences, humanities, and education. Within Financial Services, the Research Accounting function is seeking a full-time, term Senior Research and Grants Accountant to join their team within the Financial Services Department.Reporting to the Manager, Research and Grants Accounting, the Senior Research and Grants Accountant administers research, and award accounts and prepares and delivers reports. They are primarily responsible for providing information, reporting and internal control processes for research grants and other awards.The successful candidate will build relationships and balance the needs of researchers to complete their work with the accountability needs of the funding agencies and the University.Responsibilities:
  • Monitors account transactions for over-expenditures and unusual transactions.
  • Works with Researchers and the Research Office to correct errors and resolve over-expended accounts
  • Reviews grant accounts to ensure that they are current and funds are returned to grantor for dormant accounts
  • Provides support and financial guidance to researchers with respect to their research accounts.
  • Complex analysis of accounts when required or requested
  • WebClient user setup and maintenance
  • Prepares and submits accurate and timely annual and periodic external financial statements for NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR, CFI and other funding agencies as required
  • Prepares Annual Indirect Cost of Research Report to the granting Councils
  • Supervision, mentoring and training of the Research and Grants Accounting Assistant
  • Assists the Manager, Research & Grants Accounting with identifying, developing and implementing process improvements
Qualifications:
  • Professional accounting designation (CPA) or close to completion
  • An undergraduate or graduate degree would be an asset
  • Must have at least 5 years related experience
  • Supervisory experience would be an asset
  • Experience with Research or other public sector Grants preferred
  • Must have experience and skills in computer technology
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel preferred
  • Must have very effective oral and written communication skills
  • Must have superior problem solving and analytical skills
  • Must have the ability to work well and build relationships with people from a variety of backgrounds
  • Good organizational ability is required to meet deadlines and alleviate deadline pressure
  • The ability to balance the needs of researchers to complete their work with the accountability needs of the funding agencies and University.
  • Ability to make independent decisions within policies and goals of the unit
