- Perform detailed drainage design for roadway projects, including:
- Urban arterial and collector roads.
- Regional road corridors.
- Provincial highways and ramps.
- Intersection and interchange improvements.
- Design and analyze roadway drainage systems, including:
- Storm sewers, catchbasins, manholes, and outlets.
- Roadside and median ditches, swales, and channels.
- Culverts and cross‑drain systems.
- Sheet flow, spread control, and overland flow routing.
- Complete hydrologic and hydraulic analyses to support roadway drainage design, including:
- Catchment delineation and runoff calculations.
- Minor and major system capacity analysis.
- Culvert hydraulic performance and roadway overtopping assessment.
- Prepare detailed design drawings and profiles suitable for Issue for Tender (IFT) and construction, including:
- Drainage area plans.
- Storm sewer plans and profiles.
- Culvert details and erosion protection measures.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable Ontario and GTA-area standards, including:
- MTO Drainage Management Manual and MTO design standards.
- Regional and municipal road design guidelines (e.g., GTA municipalities and regions).
- Applicable stormwater management and environmental requirements.
- Coordinate drainage design with:
- Roadway geometry and grading.
- Traffic staging and construction phasing.
- Utilities and municipal servicing.
- Environmental and permitting constraints.
- Prepare and review technical reports, calculations, specifications, and quantity take-offs.
- Provide engineering support during construction, including:
- Shop drawing and submittal reviews.
- Responses to RFIs.
- Field reviews and site coordination.
- Apply professional judgment to balance safety, drainage performance, constructability, and long‑term maintenance.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on Water Resources or Environmental Engineering.
- Registered as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) or eligibility for registration.
- Demonstrated experience in transportation drainage design, including roads and/or rail infrastructure.
- Experience producing detailed drainage design drawings and calculations.
- Strong understanding of hydrology, hydraulics, and stormwater management principles.
- Working knowledge of relevant design standards and guidelines.
- Proficiency with engineering software and tools commonly used for drainage analysis and design. Familiarity with hydraulic/hydrologic modeling tools such as PCSWMM, HEC-RAS, ArcGIS, Global Mapper, AutoCAD, and/or Civil 3D.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple design tasks concurrently.
- Experience on MTO highway projects or regionally significant road corridors.
- Knowledge of major/minor drainage systems and overland flow routing in urban environments.
- Experience with road reconstruction, widening, and rehabilitation projects.
- Familiarity with climate resilience and extreme rainfall considerations in roadway drainage design.
- Experience providing construction-phase engineering support.
