- Ensure applicable safety codes and regulations are met through appropriate design and use of technology.
- Champion safety by advocating safe behavior and incorporating safety considerations into engineering and design deliverables.
- Identify and report hazards and participate in safety-related reviews as required.
- Collaborate with Project Services and Operations to produce 'Best For Project' designs that are safe, reflect Client operability requirements, and are constructible.
- Learn and become proficient in the engineering software used by the group, and monitor 'state of the art' developments in software/hardware, advising group management as appropriate.
- Review and become familiar with departmental standards; ensure conformance with current codes, standards, and mining regulations.
- Become familiar with discipline-specific standards, including specifications, design basis and criteria templates, design spreadsheets, workflow procedures, and change management forms.
- Working with the Engineer of Record, propose engineering solutions and conduct calculations to ensure compliance with codes, standards, regulations, industry guidelines, and Client standards.
- Assist with the selection of electrical power equipment and components of control and communication systems and develop schematics to ensure compliance with applicable requirements.
- Use current versions of codes, standards, regulations, and Company/Client standards in all work.
- Support for development of electrical, automation, and communication system drawings for underground and surface mine infrastructure, including:
- Shaft sinking electrical systems
- Hoist controls and shaft communication systems
- Underground substations and distribution networks
- Mine-wide fiber, copper, and wireless communication systems
- PLC/DCS/SCADA architectures, panel layouts, and instrumentation schematics
- P&IDs, loop diagrams, I/O lists, control narratives, network diagrams, and panel wiring drawings.
- Ensure designs reflect operational requirements, applicable cybersecurity best practices (where applicable), and reliability expectations appropriate for mining environments.
- Participate in design and drafting of drawings to ensure facilities satisfy functional, operability, safety, and maintainability requirements.
- Complete timely review and markups of drawings at project phase gates, coordinating with other disciplines, Project Managers, Designers, Project Services, Operations, and Quality to achieve 'one time only' reviews.
- Ensure compliance with engineering design calculations, codes, standards, and regulations.
- Complete code and math checks of own work; assist with checks of other engineers as requested.
- Attend design reviews and technical meetings as required, answering questions related to design basis and criteria.
- Support tendering and construction with clarifications and technical input as directed by the Engineer of Record.
- Under the Engineer of Record's supervision, complete general reviews of erection and shop drawings for compliance and coordination with vendor and engineered items.
- During construction, assess field conditions and provide technical recommendations in response to field enquiries.
- Conduct QA shop or on-site reviews of fabricated/constructed work to verify that quality control measures deliver compliant work.
- Prepare and issue shop and on-site review reports with observations and recommendations, and follow up to verify closure of all items.
- Apply change management principles; use standard forms; ensure scope, budget, and schedule impacts are identified and authorized.
- Assist with project close-out documentation in compliance with regulatory, Client, and Company requirements.
- Support completion and verification of mandated tests, inspections, and measurements through fabrication and construction phases.
- Occasional travel to mine sites for design development, reviews, or field verification.
- Travel periods may range from one day to several weeks and may include overseas assignments.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD or associative design software.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office; familiarity with Microsoft Project.
- Working knowledge of electrical engineering analysis software.
- Understanding of the following is considered as asset:
- CSA mining electrical standards and provincial mining regulations
- Process automation (DCS, PLC, HMI, SCADA)
- Industrial communication systems (fiber networks, copper, leaky feeder, Wi‑Fi, LTE)
