Successful candidates will work as part of multi-disciplinary project teams and will develop skills in project management, client liaison, technical reviews, and reporting.POSITION DESCRIPTIONAARES* is seeking a Wildlife Biologist/Technician to join our team at our Calgary office. Working under the general direction of experienced leads, this position will be responsible for participating in wildlife related project field and office work and will provide an opportunity for the right candidate to learn and grow professionally and personally.RESPONSIBILITIESWe are seeking a candidate who is flexible to travel and work away from Calgary for extended periods is enthusiastic and eager to lead wildlife surveys, draft outcomes and teach mentor and be responsible for their crew in the field . Desired qualifications include:
  • Leading or participating in wildlife related field work
  • Data analysis and management
  • Interpretation and assessment of species habitat requirements
  • Assist in proposal writing, study design and implementation
  • Perform background research and analysis, including consultation with government agencies
  • Produce well written drafts reports and correspondence, drawing upon technical and scientific knowledge and experience
  • Learn to manage small to medium-sized projects, communicating with clients and reporting to senior staff
  • Work within a team environment and communicate effectively with all levels of staff; you are personable and enthusiastic
  • Field work and travel is required and varies in distance and duration (several day(s) to 2 or 3 weeks occasionally)
PREFERENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • A University degree (B.Sc or M.Sc) in Ecology, Biology, and/or other Biological Science and experience in a related field
  • Registered as a P.Biol. with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists, or eligible for registration is preferred
  • Experience working in upland ecosystems within Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan, or Territories
  • Wildlife identification skills and experience in conducting field surveys in Alberta.
  • Credible experience with breeding bird surveys in Alberta and experience with amphibian and reptile survey techniques and winter wildlife tracking.
  • Willingness to work in the field, occasionally in remote locations and outside standard office hours in all manner of weather
  • Ability to write technically; reporting experience appreciated
  • Understanding of application of federal Species at Risk Act and provincial Endangered Species Act
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as within a team environment and under deadlines
  • Developed computer skills with Microsoft including Excel and Word as a minimum

This may include the ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions, such as remote or isolated areas, heavy lifting, hikes up to 5 km, working alone, and in inclement weather (within safe and reasonable limits).
