The TTC’s recruitment efforts are directly aligned to its mission of providing “a reliable, efficient, and integrated bus, streetcar and subway system that draws its high standards of customer care from our rich traditions of safety, service and courtesy.”General AccountabilityReporting to the Chief Civil Engineer, while working directly under the technical direction of the Senior Engineer – Civil and/or the Design Engineer – Civil, the incumbent is responsible for providing engineering support and design expertise in relation to civil engineering designs for transit related facilities. The incumbent liaises and co-ordinates with various stakeholders to check and ensure the coherence and consistency of information on preliminary and final designs for the civil components of projects.Key Job Functions
  • Preparing and reviewing civil designs and drawings for various projects e.g. utilities (storm, sanitary and water), drainage and storm water management, pavement, site restoration;
  • Coordinating and administration of Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) investigations and closed circuit camera condition inspections of sewers including working with consultants and contractors and visiting and working on sites which may require working outside of normal working hours and on weekends.
  • Preparing preliminary and final design CADD drawings;
  • Preparing analysis and design calculations to determine final designs;
  • Providing marked drawings to Design Draftspersons for producing civil drawings, and checking their work in accordance with TTC design standards, various design codes, engineering notes;
  • Assisting with developing design concepts;
  • Writing, editing, and providing civil contract specifications to the Department’s Technical Support Division for the production of final specifications for tender and construction by the Division;
  • Conducting field surveys, inspections, technical investigations and topography, and performing related duties as assigned;
  • Working with Engineers and/or other design services groups as part of a multi-discipline design team;
  • Responsible for treating passengers and/or employees with respect and dignity and ensuring the needs of passengers or employees with disabilities are accommodated and/or addressed (within your area of responsibility) in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders so that they can fully benefit from the TTC as a service-provider and an employer;
  • Participation in the TTC Customer Service Ambassador Program.

Education and Experience
  • A (3-year) Community College diploma in the field of Civil Engineering Technology, combined with several years of directly related experience, or a combination of education and experience deemed equivalent.
Additional Requirements
  • Sound knowledge of civil engineering design principles, methods and practices with specific knowledge of their application to the design and construction of transit related facilities i.e. on-grade pavements, water, sewer, grading & drainage, storm water management and utilities;
  • Knowledge of procedures and techniques for writing technical specifications;
  • Good working knowledge of Computer Aided Drafting and Design Systems in general, and specifically the use of Bentley Microstation software, as well as Microsoft Office computer applications;
  • Good drafting and detail design skills; analytical and problem solving skills as well as good organizational, interpersonal, verbal communication and technical reporting writing skills;
  • Familiarity with Federal/Provincial Acts, regulations, codes and municipal By-laws, standards and specifications applicable to the work e.g. Ontario Provincial Standards and Specifications and Ministry of Transportation Specifications & Guidelines, City of Toronto Standards & Specifications, as well as related permits, approvals, standard drawings, etc.;
  • A valid Province of Ontario Class “G” Driver’s licence;
  • OACETT certification as an Engineering Technologist is an asset;
  • Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees.
