
Senior Underwriter, Commercial Lines

- Develop long-term and meaningful relationships with brokers by providing legendary service and participating in broker visits, field underwriting, insurance industry functions, and marketing events.
- Assess and evaluate moderate to complex risks, analyzing requests for quotes, renewals and policy changes and recommend innovative solutions.
- Coach and mentor team members to develop their technical underwriting knowledge and to enhance broker relationships.
- Help shape the future of Commercial Lines Underwriting by providing creative solutions on process or workflow improvements to increase efficiency and elevate best practices
- Provide leadership to ensure that the regional underwriting service, production and profitability levels are achieved.
- Apply effective pricing and underwriting strategies in accordance with Company guidelines and personal underwriting authority limits.
- Within your level of authority, quote, negotiate, sell, and authorize the acceptance of moderate to complex new business, renewals, and endorsements to develop and retain profitable business according to the business plan established for the department.
- Arrange reinsurance if and when required.
- Work closely to develop and maintain positive business partnerships with brokers, reinsurers and co-workers.
- Use the computer system for policy inquiry, electronic filing, underwriting and rating transactions.
- Some travel is required.
- Minimum 5 to 7 years of commercial lines underwriting experience
- Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation preferred
- Care for people by being supportive, providing candid feedback and recognizing performance
- Maintain an expert and current understanding of all relevant Commercial Underwriting Guides and instructions related thereto
- Demonstrate the ability to handle complex risks
- Awareness of local community conditions and insurance issues
- Superior organization and demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities and deadlines
- Exemplary and proactive customer service skills to identify needs, effectively negotiate, and provide tailored solutions to brokers
- Great communication skills (both written and verbal)
- Strong negotiating skills and business savvy
- Initiative and ability to work under pressure
- Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office products and computer tools
- No Canadian work experience required however must be eligible to work in Canada.
