The PositionThe Controller plays a key leadership role in managing the financial operations of the shíshálh Nation Government. Reporting to the CFO, the Controller is responsible for overseeing accounting, financial reporting, internal controls, audit preparation, and compliance with Nation policies and funding agreements. This position ensures the integrity and accuracy of financial information to support informed decision-making by leadership and Council.The Candidate:
  • Lead and oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger.
  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
  • Ensure compliance with Nation financial policies, applicable legislation, and terms of funding agreements.
  • Coordinate annual audits, liaise with external auditors, and implement audit recommendations.
  • Develop, monitor, and enforce strong internal controls and risk management practices.
  • Provide financial analysis, forecasting, and advice to the CFO, Council, and senior management to support informed decision-making.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the Nation departments and monitor departmental and project-level financial performance against budget.
  • Play a key role in the migration to a new ERP system, including process mapping, testing, and training staff to ensure a successful transition.
  • Support capital project financial oversight and reporting, including tracking of funding agreements, expenditures, and commitments.
  • Supervise, coach, and mentor finance team staff, fostering professional growth and a collaborative team environment.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve financial systems, processes, and reporting for greater efficiency and transparency.
  • Perform all other duties within the scope of the position, as assigned.
Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:
  • A professional accounting designation (CPA – CA, CGA, or CMA) is required.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience, preferably in a government, Indigenous, or not-for-profit setting.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations and public sector reporting. Experience with audits, compliance, and reporting for multiple funding agreements.
  • Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, and team-building skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • High level of integrity, accountability, and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of and respect for the shíshálh Nation's history, culture, and governance are strong assets.
  • Acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
  • Valid Driver's License required (Class 4 would be desirable).
