  • Create mechanical packaging solutions using industry standard tools to design, analyze and document electronic assemblies
  • Ability to analyze/interpret schematic drawings, mechanical drawings and understanding part tolerances, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, standard industry symbols and drawing conventions to a level where the information provided is sufficient to transfer to manufacturing
  • Experience in designing to requirements and standards that ensure compliance to environmental conditions like shock/vibration, moisture/dust ingress and electrical/magnetic susceptibility and emissions
  • Understanding of configuration/change management principles and their application in the product development life cycle
  • Clear understanding and ability to manage/lead the work product reviews (System (or Software) Requirements Review (SRR), Preliminary Design Review (PDR), Critical Design Review (CDR), etc.). Process for design validation throughout the planning, development and maintenance stages of product development cycle
  • Support the project team lead in the following areas:
  • Budget development
  • Schedule development
  • Contribute to monthly progress reports (% complete, Estimate To Complete (ETC), scheduling updates and out of scope tasks
  • Development of work task estimates
  • Identification and resolution of potential risks related to budget, schedule and product costs.
  • Support Production team during New Product Introduction (NPI) stages
  • Build parts Bill Of Materials (BOMs) and respond to obsolescence as required
  • Conduct and minute peer reviews of cable design output through project workflow.
  • Technical tasks:
  • Mechanical design - Produce requirements-driven CAD model solutions to be productized for naval environments
  • Physical analysis - Optimize structural design margins with FEA tools to ensure solutions are suitable for use
  • Thermal design - Optimize mechanical designs considering thermal constraints for cabinet rack-mounted equipment
  • RF design - Design systems considering conducted/radiated emissions and susceptibility
  • Test planning - based on requirements develop verification plans to evaluate lifecycle performance of equipment/systems
  • Peer reviewing - Ensure work products effectively meet requirements, conform to standards and eliminate defects earlier
  • Requirements reviews- Conduct reviews of internal customer/stakeholder requirements ensuring they are objective and have a clearly defined achievement metric
  • Design specifications - Author specifications detailing design rationale employed to effectively meet requirements
  • Risk analysis - Assess risks/opportunities that may be realized during the development lifecycle
What you bring to the role
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and/or Mechanical Technologist diploma from an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Minimum of two years relevant work experience in design and production environment or a master's degree and three years design for extreme environments/marine environments
  • Two+ years of PTC Creo and/or Dassault SolidWorks Computer Aided Design (CAD) applications
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Visio
  • Working knowledge of configuration management processes for engineering changes.
Additional skills desired for the role
  • Experience in power and thermal analysis for electronic enclosures
  • Working knowledge of Design to Cost (DTC) and Design for Test (DFT)/Design for Manufacture (DFM)
  • Cable/interconnect design and specification experience
  • Resourceful/agreeable/extrovert to enable strong vendor liaison/customer communications
  • Production and results-oriented self-starter.
