1 temporary, full-time position up to 12 months in durationApply your strategic leadership to a complex portfolio dedicated to public safety, environmental health, and operational excellence in urban forestry!Reporting to the Director, Parks and Urban Forestry, the General Supervisor leads a diverse team of nearly 200 unionized staff who deliver a variety of services and programs to Edmontonians. The Urban Forestry and Ecology unit acts as the steward of over 400,000 boulevard and open space trees and approximately 4,000 hectares of natural areas within the City of Edmonton.The Urban Forestry and Ecology unit is responsible for three principal areas of service. The Tree Care team provides expert municipal arboriculture services to ensure a resilient and thriving urban forest, focusing on tree health, public safety, and accessibility. Concurrently, the Planting and Establishment team strengthens the urban forest by renewing, installing, and establishing over 6,000 high-quality, disease-free caliper trees across the City’s boulevards and open spaces. The Natural Area and Ecology team oversees the preservation and ecological monitoring of natural areas. This includes ensuring the implementation of relevant policies and bylaws, coordinating tree and fire risk mitigation, maintaining formal viewpoints, and protecting natural stand trees during construction, all while championing naturalization and restorative activities.What will you do?
  • Engage and support staff in developing action plans to enhance communication, solve problems creatively, promote integration and support excellence
  • Ensure staff are empowered, have the competencies, and are well equipped to perform their roles
  • Strategically identify and allocate necessary resources, including staffing and budget, for the successful execution of projects and programs
  • Ensure the prudent and effective use of financial and human resources, determine and review annual budget requirements, and proactively monitor performance and financial reporting
  • Support Program Managers in meeting Service Level Agreement targets
  • Ensure strict adherence to all Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S), ENVISO environmental management system, procurement guidelines, project, program management methodologies, and all other relevant City policies and procedures throughout the area
  • Apply the GBA+ process to the development and review of policies, practices and frameworks
Qualifications
  • Knowledge or training and/or education in Management, Environmental Science, Landscape Architecture, Planning, Engineering, or other related disciplines
  • Experience in a leadership role within a large, complex unionized organization
  • Demonstrated knowledge in landscape operations management with experience overseeing service delivery
  • Combinations of education and experience will be considered
Assets:
  • Experience working with large seasonal operations and staff change over
  • Additional certification or coursework/training in financial management, public works administration, change management, or other leadership training

  • Salary: (Annually) $123,938.39 - $154,920.88
