The Power System Controller Apprentice is responsible for operating the electrical distribution system to ensure a safe, reliable and cost-effective delivery of electrical power on a 24-hour and 365 days a year basis. In performing this, Power System Controller Apprentice monitors system conditions, develops, directs and dispatches system switching, administers work protection as per the Utility Work Protection Code (UWPC) and guides trouble response for emergency events under the direction of a Power System Controller. The position runs on a rotating 24/7, 365 day/year shift schedule.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Creates, updates, maintains and verifies logs, reports and databases to record system conditions during planned and emergency conditions
  • Leads, distributes, follows up on and checks work; answers inquiries and gives guidance as required
  • Liaises, consults and co-ordinates with contractors; internal and external customers
  • Operates the system to ensure the safe, reliable and cost-effective distribution of electrical energy
  • Monitors system loading and initiates appropriate action to achieve desired system performance
  • Ensures proper isolation and work protection is provided for planned and emergency work
  • Directs and dispatches field operations to complete planned and emergency work
  • Schedules, plans and directs switching operations to complete planned and emergency work
  • Recommends changes and upgrades to the system to improve system performance and safety
  • Maintains system maps, displays and schematics
  • Informs other departments of emergency response status
  • Supports and assists field crews in response to emergencies such as outages, accidents and spills
  • Advises management of significant events
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with one of the following: Electrical Engineering Technologist diploma; Electromechanical Engineering Technology - Power and Control Diploma; Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree or Bachelor degree with a concentration on Energy Systems Engineering
  • Preference will be given to candidates with the Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) designation from the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT)
  • Familiarity with utility safety regulations and practices
  • Demonstrated experience in a variety of business computer software packages
  • Familiar with computerized, remote automated switching system
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
