CommunicationsPosition Summary:McGill Student Services is comprised of seven units that provide support, programming, and resources to enhance student well-being and success throughout their academic journey. The Student Services Communications team supports these units by promoting services, events, and initiatives through coordinated, student-centered communications.Under the supervision of the Senior Communications Officer, the Communications Assistant will support the development and execution of social media content and communications initiatives across digital platforms. This role is ideal for a creative, detail-oriented student interested in building hands-on experience in digital communications, content creation, and student engagement. This role is ideal for students looking to build a portfolio in social media and digital communications.Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Create, schedule, and manage engaging content for social media platforms (primarily Instagram), including captions, graphics, and short-form videos (e.g., Reels)
- Film, edit, and produce short-form video content; appear on camera to host, narrate, or participate in interviews
- Take photos at events and capture b-roll footage of campus life, Student Services programming, and seasonal activities
- Interview members of the McGill community to create compelling, student-centered content
- Assist with content planning and executing, including identifying subjects, coordinating participation, and supporting filming logistics
- Contribute ideas for social media trends, campaigns, and content series
- Assist with content calendars and participate in creative planning sessions
- Create and edit graphics or visuals using Canva or similar tools
- Monitor social media comments and flag questions or issues to the Student Services Communications team
- Review analytics and performance metrics to help assess content effectiveness
- Monitor peer university and sector accounts for inspiration and benchmarking
- Support the development of promotional materials (digital screens, posters, newsletters, etc.)
- Organize and maintain a shared library of photos, videos, and communications assets
- Assist with preparing and organizing equipment for filming (e.g., charging microphones, packing gear)
- Provide general administrative and communications support as required
- Must be eligible for McGill’s Work-Study Program
- Currently enrolled as a McGill student (preferably in Communications, Media, Marketing, or a related field)
- Experience with video editing tools (e.g., CapCut or similar) and graphic design tools (e.g., Canva)
- Comfortable appearing on camera and engaging with peers through interviews or presentations
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, with working knowledge of French
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Service-oriented with strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail
- Strong knowledge of social media platforms and content trends
- Ability to manage time-sensitive tasks efficiently and work under tight deadlines
- Creative, proactive, and eager to contribute ideas
- Knowledge of English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level #4 (spoken, fluent) and at a level #4 (written, fluent) on a scale of 0-4.
