Apply through Careers in your account. ​Job Title: Artistic Director, Studio 58, Theatre Arts programEmployee Group: LFAEmployee Type: Regular (Fixed Term)Start Date: Thursday, January 1 2026End Date: Sunday, April 30 2028Job Summary: The Theatre Arts department is looking to for a temporary Artistic Director for Studio 58, for the period January 1 2026 to April 30 2028.Job Description:The Artistic Director of Studio 58, Theatre Arts Program, performs many inter-related functions which span the responsibilities of:1. The Artistic Director of a professional theatre;2. The Artistic Director of a conservatory theatre school;3. A Department Chair within Langara College which include:Part I:(a) Formulating the long-term artistic vision for training.(b) Setting the highest professional standards for productions, students, faculty and staff.(c) Choosing plays/setting the season/setting artistic content which best exploit and develop the strengths of the student acting company.(d) Hiring and supervising the artistic team - directors/designers/choreographers/musical directors for each production.(e) Directing some Studio 58 productions.(f) Maintaining College section budget allocations.(g) Maintaining an effective liaison with the artistic community at large and other professional theatre companies.(h) Seeking outside placements for students with professional theatre companies to enhance their training.(i) Guiding fundraising efforts for the program.Part II:(a) Promoting students and graduates within the profession – which requires maintaining strong personal connections and knowledge of the individual needs of professional theatre companies and referring students and graduates for job opportunities.(b) Staying current within the profession and maintaining national as well as local contacts in order to attract a high caliber of guest directors, instructors, outside examiners, and applicants to the program.(c) Overseeing the annual recruitment of students – setting dates and times for auditions, making promotional decisions, audition procedure and choosing students – travelling to recruit students across Canada.(d) Setting, overseeing, and maintaining budgets for productions, special workshops and other activities within the annual budget allocations.(e) Recruiting, supervising, and sometimes training members of the instructional team.(f) Counseling students.(g) Directing periodic pedagogical reviews for all aspects of training (acting, voice, movement, production, etc.).Part III:(a) Setting, overseeing, and maintaining budgets for the overall program.(b) Delegating administrative needs of the department to the Associate Director and other faculty members.(c) Creating term calendars and timetables.(d) Attending weekly staff meetings and scheduled faculty meetings.(e) Attending final presentations by students from all terms in the Acting and Production Option.(f) Attending and chairing mid-term and end-of-term marking meetings for students of all terms in the Acting and Production option.(g) Attending and chairing mid-term and end-of-term individual assessment meetings with each student in the program.(h) Supervising support staff.(i) Liaising with College administration.(j) Participating on College committees as required.(k) Representing Theatre Arts at Studio 58 at Creative Arts Division meetings.Additional Info:Required qualifications:·Experience as professional theatre administrator, such as the Artistic Director of a professional company.· Strong personal connections and knowledge of the individual needs of professional theatre companies.· Strong professional contacts nationally, internationally and locally as well up-to-date knowledge of trends, patterns, innovations within the professional theatre and allied arts.· Appropriate credentials for teaching some aspect of the acting curriculum as well as current knowledge of training philosophies and methods.· Appropriate experience as a professional director of plays.· Familiarity with contemporary and classical theatre repertoire.· Demonstrates long-range vision including the ability to choose a season of plays which will enhance and vary the student experience. This should be balanced with audience appeal in choice of season offerings.· Exceptional leadership skills including ensemble building.· Exceptional managerial and organizational skills.· Computer skills including Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and ability to use current College administrative interface.Education:
Masters degree in a related field or equivalent (noted below):-Bachelor’s degree plus five years of practical professional experience (noted below) and evidence of senior membership in an appropriate union or recognized professional association (where applicable)- A Bachelor’s degree plus one year of additional conservatory-style training and/or an apprenticeship with a recognized master teacher and three years of practical professional experience (noted below) and evidence of senior membership in an appropriate union or recognized professional association (where applicable)-Ten years of practical professional experience (noted below) and evidence of senior membership in an appropriate union or recognized professional association (where applicable)- Completion of a recognized professional theatre or film training program plus five years of practical professional experience (noted below) and evidence of senior membership in an appropriate union or recognized professional association (where applicable)(Professional experience considered is experience as an actor, director, dancer, designer, choreographer, vocal coach, musical director, playwright, movement specialist, stage and/or production manager)Why Join Langara?At Langara College, we support the College’s vision of promoting wellness and fostering personal and professional growth for our employees.
