DescriptionAre you passionate about building high-performance discoverysystems that serve millions of customers? The PCX Search team owns Amazon's promotion discovery platform, a mission-critical service powering how customers find deals, coupons, price discounts, and other promotions across Amazon Retail worldwide. We process millions of requests daily with strict latency and availability requirements, leveraging sophisticated ranking algorithms, ML-based personalization, and distributed caching to deliver relevant promotions at massive scale.
As an SDE L5, you will architect and build core discovery systems that directly impact customer experience on Today's Deals, homepage, product pages, and personalized recommendations. You'll design scalable AWS-native solutions using OpenSearch, DynamoDB, Lambda, and other cloud services, optimize system performance for peak traffic events, integrate ML models for intelligent ranking, and lead technical initiatives from design through operation. This role offers true end-to-end ownership - architecture, implementation, performance optimization, and operational excellence.

  • Design and architect scalable promotion discovery systems, making technical decisions on search indexing, caching strategies, ML integration, and AWS service selection to meet strict latency and availability requirements
  • Own end-to-end delivery of critical features, from architecture and implementation through testing, deployment, and operational excellence during high-traffic events like Prime Day
  • Influence Principal Engineers and senior leaders across Amazon to build unified discovery solutions that scale globally and deliver exceptional customer experiences
  • Mentor junior engineers and drive technical excellence through code reviews, design reviews, and championing best practices in distributed systems and performance optimization
  • Partner with Product, Data Science, and cross-functional teams to shape the technical vision for promotion discovery and translate business needs into scalable solutions
A day in the life
As a an SDE II, you will work with your team to invent, design, and build software that is used by millions of people. You will have a direct impact on our customers and the business. You will be responsible for:Designing, implementing, testing, and deploying scalable, low-latency services and features for our deals and promotions platform.
Working closely with product managers, UX designers, and other engineers to translate customer and business requirements into robust technical solutions.
Contributing to the operational excellence of the team's services, participating in on-call rotations, and improving system performance and reliability.
Setting a high standard for you and the team by writing clean, maintainable code and participating in code reviews.
Mentoring junior engineers and sharing your knowledge to help the team grow stronger.About the team

We build and operate the core discovery engine that powers Today's Deals, homepage widgets, and personalized experiences across all Amazon marketplaces, leveraging sophisticated ranking algorithms and ML models to surface the right promotions to the right customers. We deliver exceptional performance and reliability at massive scale, partnering closely with Data Science, Product, and business teams to continuously improve discovery quality and customer engagement.Basic Qualifications- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience programming with at least one software programming languagePreferred Qualifications- 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience

As a total compensation company, Amazon's package may include other elements such as sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
