We operate the province's electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario's electricity needs - now and into the future.The opportunityCarry out supervisory responsibilities and administer work programs associated with Market Settlements. Leading the Customer Billing within Market Settlement, this role is responsible for ensuring the efficient, timely and accurate settlement of the electricity market under the market rules, government regulations, Ontario Energy Board orders, regulation services or other service level agreements.The position is responsible for providing technical leadership over daily work activities to personnel involved in the interpretation, administration or application of settlement services to customers and active participation in project work for Market Settlements refresh/upgrade as required.What you'll be doing
  • Supervise assigned staff through planning, organizing, assigning, managing detailed tasks, providing advice and direction and ensuring quality, accuracy and timeliness. Deal with routine personnel problems and initiate recommendations to Manager on personnel matters.
  • Oversee and participate in staff performance management reviews, staff hiring and rotations, staff training and development, staff career growth planning and staff routine personnel problems. Provide recommendations to Sr. Manager on all staff related matters.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to personnel involved in and/or participating in the interpretation, administration, or application of settlement services to customers. Maintain an expert knowledge of settlement activities for purposes of interpreting and applying contractual obligations as they apply to financial payments and penalties.
  • Contribute to the development of training packages and documentation relating to the maintenance of records, work methods, technology, techniques, and the policies, practices, and procedures relating to the Market Rules.
  • Oversee review of the effectiveness of existing settlement processes and lead the development and implementation of effectiveness and efficiency improvements.
  • Oversee development of solutions to complex settlement issues/problems where the application of market rules is subject to interpretation by internal and external stakeholders. Assess alternative solutions evaluating the impact on operational procedures, operational reliability, market rules, technical feasibility and economic considerations.
  • Negotiate, influence and collaborate with other groups to reach a common understanding and agreement on important market facing issues and potential changes to operations and/or settlement processes and procedures.
  • Represent the IESO on both internal and external committees as required and act as an expert resource to stakeholders on matters related to the settlement function.
  • Lead or participate in projects as required.
  • Provide business expertise to IT staff in maintenance of key settlement related IT systems including data and system change requests. Lead in the resolution of identified issues related to key settlement IT systems.
  • Participate, as lead contact, in bi-annual settlement audit.
What you need to succeedEducation:
  • Requires knowledge of business administration, computer science, engineering, or related discipline to manage settlement processes and associated activities. Requires excellent written and oral communication skills in order to develop documentation and to communicate effectively with all contacts involved in accomplishing work objectives.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the completion of a four-year university education in business, computer science or engineering.
Experience:
  • Demonstrated leadership experiences to influence and motivate others to work as team members.
  • Must have project management skills to effectively complete work objectives/projects on time and within Settlement defined timeframes.
  • Requires extensive knowledge and understanding of the design of the IESO-administered markets, including a broad understanding of the electricity industry in general.
  • Requires a background that allows for broad thinking and high analytical and reasoning skills. Demonstrated ability in the review of Settlement information and processes to support problem resolution.
  • Experience in building relationships, strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • A period of 8 years, including up to 10 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
