- Act as a primary technical resource, ensuring supervisors and employees have immediate access to specialized Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) knowledge and solutions for their unique business needs
- Support, educate, and guide people leaders in applying City policies. This ensures informed decision-making that prioritizes employee protection and minimizes corporate liability
- Bridge the corporate services with frontline service providers ensuring alignment in COR Audit planning, representing the City with interactions with Provincial authorities, and ensuring the needs or the business area are represented in the corporate standards
- Support in the coordination, planning, and execution of Leadership review events
- Assess the effectiveness of the City of Edmonton (COE) safety programs in reducing work-related incidents through pulse checks or internal auditing of specific program elements
- Promote and drive COE health and safety campaigns to inform staff and boost employee participation rates across all departments
- Contribute as a partner to the review and development of COE safety standards
- Work alongside internal and external partners to brainstorm and implement creative safety solutions that address unique municipal challenges
- Maintain a dedicated on-call presence to provide immediate assistance and guidance for safety concerns that arise outside of regular office hours
- Degree or Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in Occupational Health and Safety or a related discipline with coursework in health and safety
- Degree - Four (4) years experience, Diploma - Six (6) years of experience as an OHS professional, with loss prevention experience and working knowledge in areas such as process safety management, safety management system development, and implementation, incident/injury prevention, hazard identification, qualitative and quantitative risk analysis
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) and/or Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST)
- Experience in the following:
- Leading incident investigations to identify root causes and corrective actions
- Conducting audits (internal/external)
- Reviewing and assessing third-party safety plans, procedures, and practices for the safe and effective delivery of work
- Contractor management
- Preparing statistical reports on safety performance and recommending improvement opportunities
- Knowledge of municipalities, municipal governance, and unionized environments
- Knowledge of internal and external audits, the Certificate of Recognition (COR) program, and/or ISO45001 Occupational Health and Safety Standard
- Exceptional interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively engage with frontline workers, managers, project managers, and executives
- Intermediate to advanced computer skills, including Google applications such as Gmail, Gchat, Meets, Docs, Sheets and Slides
- Strong time management and organizational skills to prioritize activities, adapt to change, and stay focused in a dynamic environment
- Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills to effectively analyze situations and problems, identify root causes, and recommend solutions
- Alignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies (
- Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel toed boots, is a requirement for this position
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Applicants may be required to arrange their own transportation for use on City business, and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy

- Overtime work may be required
- Note: This position ​may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement ​with ​the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance
