We use microscopy and molecular techniques to examine pathogens that affect pollinator health and ecological field techniques to monitor bee diversity and pollination in agroecosystems in Alberta. ABARC is proud to be part of the Technology Access Canada network, providing applied research, training, outreach, and innovation services for the beekeeping and pollination industries.The Role:We are seeking motivated and enthusiastic entomology laboratory assistants to support research projects focused on pollinators and insects in cropping environments. This position largely requires laboratory work. The incumbent must be comfortable with repetitive tasks and sitting for long periods of time. The position is from September 11th to December 22nd with the possibility of extension.Wage: $20/hourSchedule: FlexibleJob Description
  • Sorting, labelling, and preparing insect specimens for identification and analysis.
  • Assist with taxonomic identifications of bee species and other insects.
  • Follow detailed protocols and manage and record samples with integrity.
  • Keep detailed laboratory notes.
  • Work effectively in a team environment, participate in meetings, and communicate clearly and professionally with other team members (in English or French).
  • Assist with data entry in Excel and other database software.
  • Participate in workshops for the broader community as part of our outreach initiatives.
  • Performs other related duties as required, including assisting staff in processing insect specimens for museum storage.
  • Most duties involve prolonged sitting and repetitive tasks.

  • Current part-time or full-time college or polytechnic student.
  • A background or interest in biology, ecology or entomology is an asset.
  • Experience with taxonomic identification of insects also an asset.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks while maintaining a high standard of quality.
  • Follows directions and protocols with precision.
  • Cooperates effectively in a team setting but also independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills and detail orientated.
  • Basic computer skills and a research background are desirable: i.e. database programs and Microsoft Office Suite (or equivalent).
  • Subject knowledge and oral/written communication skills to discuss and document research progress.
  • Ability to work independently, accurately and to problem solve technical and methodological issues that arise during the course of the research.
  • Ability to apply sound research techniques, methodology and logical critical analysis. Strong organization and interpersonal skills.
  • High personal motivation and detail-orientation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook;
