- Data Collection and Analysis: Conduct research using primary data sources and select information needed for the analysis of key themes and trends.
- Technical Developments Recommendation: Discuss and recommend technical developments to improve the quality of the website/portal/applications software and supporting infrastructure to better meet users' needs.
- Technical Troubleshooting: Manage technical troubleshooting projects, ensuring effective diagnosis of technical issues with equipment and experiments and the development of effective solutions.
- Research: Achieve specific goals for a designated part of a research program. Involves working within established research systems.
- Personal Capability Building: Develop own capabilities by participating in assessment and development planning activities as well as formal and informal training and coaching; gain or maintain external professional accreditation, where relevant, to improve performance and fulfill personal potential. Maintain an in-depth understanding of technology, external regulation, and industry best practices through ongoing education, attending conferences, and reading specialist media.
- Testing: Develop product specifications and design test procedures and standards.
- Project Management: Deliver small- or medium-scale projects while working within an established program management plan.
- Engineering Drawings: Create complex engineering drawings to support the communication, evaluation, and implementation of engineering solutions.
- Equipment Installation: Lead major equipment rebuilds; guide planned installation of complex systems.
- Process Design Engineering: Analyze information and specify the methods and process steps, as well as the plant, machinery, and equipment, required to design and continuously improve manufacturing or materials processes and process systems to deliver the end product within specified cost and quality parameters.
- Engineering Solutions Design: Design engineering solutions and the associated validation process to enable the realization of a design brief (for example, in terms of functionality, performance, aesthetics, and cost) that conforms to organizational and/or regulatory standards.
- Installation Monitoring and Control: Operate highly complex installation systems, devices, machinery and complete standard engineering assignments, solving problems by selecting appropriate engineering techniques and making relevant design recommendations.
- Client & Customer Management (External): Manage relationships with small clients while also helping senior colleagues manage relationships with larger key clients and customers.
- Bachelor's Degree Electrical Engineering or Equivalent Level
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) is Mandatory.
- General Experience: Minimum of 15+ years of experience in instrumentation and control engineering, ideally in municipal water/wastewater and industrial projects. (Mandatory)
- Managerial Experience: Experience of general supervision of more junior colleagues
- Proven experience delivering projects for Ontario municipalities such as City of Toronto, York Region, and Halton Region.
- Strong technical knowledge in:
- P&IDs and control systems design
- Industrial networking (Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, Profibus, etc.)
- Fieldbus architecture and instrumentation communications
- Process and building automation systems
- PLC/HMI/SCADA systems (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Emerson)
- Control panel layout and fabrication
- Security, access control, CCTV, and facility monitoring systems
- Familiarity with Canadian and North American codes and standards.
- Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate deliverables, timelines, and technical quality within multidisciplinary project teams.
- Experience with programming (IEC 61131-3: Ladder, Function Block, Structured Text), Ignition, Wonderware, or GE iFIX.
- Exposure to OT/IT network infrastructure, wireless/cellular solutions, and cybersecurity practices.
- Involvement in HAZOP studies or Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS).
- Familiarity with design tools such as AutoCAD and Revit.
- Project experience in transportation infrastructure, social infrastructure, RNG/biogas facilities, and food processing facilities.
