Komatsu supports a myriad of markets, including housing, infrastructure, water, pipeline, minerals, automobile, aerospace, electronics and medical, through its many brands and subsidiaries, including TimberPro, Joy, P&H, Montabert, Modular Mining Systems, Hensley Industries, NTC, and Gigaphoton.Job OverviewThe Welder/Fitter will be part of Komatsu's New Product Development Facility and is responsible for making/fitting and repairing parts used in the construction of the next generation of Komatsu's underground mobile mining equipment (e.g. LHD's, Haul Trucks & Drilling Equipment). The Welder/Fitter will also provide feedback to Engineering to make improvements and resolve issues with new prototype machines and will be responsible for ensuring quality products are being produced and maintains a safe, clean and productive work environment.Key Job Responsibilities
  • Use manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal pieces using processes such as gas tungsten arc (TIG or GTAW), gas metal arc (MIG or GMAW), flux-cored arc (FAW), plasma arc (PAW), shielded metal arc (SMAW), and oxy-acetylene (OAW);
  • Weld components in flat, vertical, horizontal or overhead positions;
  • Setting up and operating machinery such as brake presses, shears, plasma cutters, oxy-fuel cutting torches, grinders and drills to bend, punch, cut and form metal components;
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings and schematics;
  • Performing calculations and applying shop formulas and other mathematical methods to develop patterns;
  • Gouge metals, using the air-arc gouging process;
  • Position and secure workpieces, using hoists, cranes, wire, and banding machines or hand tools. Utilize material handling, rigging, hoisting and lifting equipment to move completed assemblies safely;
  • Clean or degrease parts, using wire brushes, portable grinders, or chemical baths;
  • Cut, contour, and bevel metal plates and structural shapes to dimensions as specified by blueprints, layouts, work orders, and templates, using powered saws, hand shears, or chipping knives;
  • Mix and apply protective coatings to products; and
  • Dismantle metal assemblies or cut scrap metal, using thermal-cutting equipment such as flame-cutting torches or plasma-arc equipment.
  • Complete required paperwork, as required.
Qualifications/Requirements
  • College diploma in Welding and Fabrication technician or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5-10 years' experience in Welding and Fitting trade.
  • Canadian Welding Bureau certification for welding in all positions is required.
  • Experience fitting and welding of off-highway equipment components (e.g., Frames, booms, buckets, hoods etc.) for the Mining, Construction or Forestry industry.
  • Familiarity with the use of jigs & fixtures.
  • Possess a solid understanding of welding equipment and welding accessories.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, geometry and their applications in fabrication.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
  • Ability to read blueprints, drawings, schematics.
  • Good communication skills to work with multi-dimensional team.
  • Willingness to learn.
