The NDT Inspections team is part of the Field Asset Services & Testing Division that provides on-site inspections and services to generating stations, substations, field equipment and vehicles. Other teams in the Division include Electrical Field Services, Civil Technologies and Applied Chemistry.Our team specializes in development of innovative inspection techniques and equipment for custom testing applications in a variety of industries including power utilities, manufacturing and transportation. The team consists of experienced engineers, technicians and certified inspectors and we offer a complete set of field and lab NDE services to our customers. Engineers in this group review non-destructive and coating inspections, provide technical reports, as well as technical advisory on welding procedures, life assessment of structures and pressure vessels.Under the direction of the Division Manager, the successful candidate will provide technical and professional leadership to a team of Engineers and Technicians to achieve work program and department objectives. The Team Lead will excel at enhancing the scope of services and work prioritization to ensure that the team is focused on delivering core work on time, on budget and to the required level of safety, quality, and customer service.
  • Lead and support in the execution of projects of varying complexities which would include a variety of lab and field testing, consulting and laboratory work.
  • Provide technical guidance to the team by mentoring and coaching junior members and training the members in safe operating procedures and best practices.
  • Lead equipment maintenance activities such as troubleshooting equipment issues, developing maintenance schedule and coordinating maintenance tasks.
  • Provide technical advise on work prioritization and resource allocation to meet project needs, review work in progress and assess work for accuracy, required results and compliance with Quality and Engineering standards.
  • Uphold and implement safety protocols and procedures to minimize risks and testing hazards.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and drive team efficiency as well as manage potential schedule delays and resourcing issues. Initiate plans for alternative actions as needed; able to rearrange competing priorities to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Promote the development of long-term business strategy and annual department- specific objectives cutting across quality, health & safety, environmental, new services, capital investment, client engagement, and financial targets
  • Set annual staff objectives, conduct mid-year and year-end performance assessment, address performance issues through performance management practices, support staff career progression by establishing personal development plans.
  • Participate in design of project methodology, scoping, costing/budgeting, and preparation of quotations/proposals, and providing technical reports.
  • Support the Division Manager in building a resilient team through recruitment, change management, development/training, and staff promotions.
  • Work collaboratively with other teams across Powertech and seek opportunities for cross discipline projects.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Mechanical, Materials or Metallurgical engineering recognized by universities in Canada. Candidates with post graduate education are welcome to apply.
  • Minimum 8 years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Advanced knowledge in NDT methods including magnetic particle, dye penetration, visual inspection, ultrasonic thickness, UT shear wave, phased array ultrasonic, eddy current array, and x-ray radiography.
  • Demonstrated experience in testing and inspection of protective coating systems for industrial environments.
  • Supervisory experience in leading a highly qualified team of technical experts.
  • Industry engagement demonstrated through engagement in professional societies, current knowledge of codes and standards, awareness and interest in technology advancements, and additional relevant professional development training
  • Registration as a Professional engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists of BC
  • Must hold a valid class 5 BC driver’s license or equivalent.
In addition, the following are desired skillsets:
  • Strong knowledge of hydroelectric generating stations equipment (turbines, penstocks, gates, and mechanical equipment), and operation and maintenance practices. Experience with vehicle inspections and certifications including aerial trucks and mobile cranes are desired assets.
  • Demonstrated management of a P&L and an understanding of annual planning, budgeting, and business forecasting is an asset
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills including the ability to build successful relationships, make presentations to technical and non-technical audiences and liaise with peers in industry.
  • Strong project management and goal-setting skills with the ability to work with senior management and subject matter experts.
  • Excellent risk-based decision-making capabilities
  • Previous experience working in a unionized environment is an asset.
  • Able to manage multi-disciplinary projects; inclusive of budgets, resources, schedules, and deliverables through proposal, definition, initiation, planning, execution, reporting, and closure stages.
  • Computer and software systems skills as applicable to position including but not limited to: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Project, and Outlook.Experience with databases is an asset.
  • Able to listen and encourage open dialogue with project team members. Able to receive constructive feedback and present alternate points of view to Managers and stakeholders.
