POSITION OVERVIEWKaeja d’Dance and Jaberi Dance Theatre—two leading, innovative Toronto-based dance companies with decades of impact, and a long history of collaboration, each requires part-time General Management Services. Together, they have partnered to offer a unique opportunity for one individual to hold a position with full-time scope, leading the administration of both companies as an independent contractor.They are seeking an experienced leader who enjoys working collaboratively and contributing creative ideas, has a deep knowledge of the not-for-profit arts sector, and can provide year-round operational and strategic management for the two companies at different stages of growth. Working in a hybrid (remote and in person) model, this position is a renewable contract and reports to the Artistic Directors of each Company. Toronto-based since 1990, Co-Artistic Directors Karen and Allen Kaeja, lead an award-winning provocative contemporary dance creation, dance films, digital innovations and empowering education, mentoring, and community and outreach programs. The Company collaborates with international and local dance artists, composers, designers and collaborators, and presenters, to create performances that push boundaries and infuse local and international communities with exciting new experiences both on stage and site-specific. Kaeja develops performance platforms for professional dance artists to thrive. We care about the action we take in Canada and abroad, and the responsibility of bringing together art-making and audiences. Kaeja is committed to evolving equity practices and accessibility within the sector. With over 160 original works, including commissions worldwide, our Company performances often include professionals with local community movers, provoking collaborative relationships between the body and the everyday.(JDT) is an award-winning Toronto-based company creating contemporary dance-theatre for the stage, screen, and public space under the artistic leadership of Roshanak Jaberi. Founded in 2015, it is a leading Canadian presence known for bold political art that engages globally relevant themes and convenes artists with researchers, activists, and community leaders through dialogue and collective inquiry. Through an intersectional lens, its practice is grounded in deep research and generative collaboration, resulting in original cross-disciplinary creations that centre the lived realities of marginalized people. JDT tours nationally and internationally, creating stage productions, films, site-specific performances, and digital art exhibitions. It also advances the field through master workshops, mentorship and professional development, research and creation residencies, guest-choreographer commissions, and community education and advocacy initiatives, extending its artistic work into meaningful public engagement and sectoral contribution.LEADERSHIP ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe following outlines the scope of General Management Services to be provided to each of the two companies–Kaeja d’Dance and Jaberi Dance Theatre.Operational & Financial Management
  • Coordinates and oversees all operational systems and processes, ensures the execution of policies and procedures to support the two organizations in carrying out their mission
  • Collaborates in developing this shared oversight model
  • Collaborates with and advises the respective Artistic Directors and their Boards on strategic development activities to enhance organizational capacity
  • Leads the development of strategic plans, guidelines and policies, and all reports; works alongside the respective Board President and Board of each Company to develop new policies and procedures and supports the Board’s subcommittees
  • Contributes to the development of strategies to reduce and remove barriers to employment, participation, and opportunities
  • Collaborates with the Artistic Directors in the preparation of multi-year budgets (including CADAC financial updates), financial plans, and financial updates for activities, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, available resources, long-term financial goals, and strategic plans, for approval of the Board of Directors
  • Oversees invoicing and expense documentation and supports timely, budget-aligned completion of projects; works with a bookkeeper
  • Collaborates closely with and oversees staff, collaborators, contractors and vendors with Artistic Directors to ensure the effective and efficient administration of all programming, including budgeting and financials
  • Reports to respective Artistic Directors separately and provides regular updates to the respective Boards of Directors and Board committees on programming, education, community, and outreach initiatives; ensuring that information and/or proposals presented reflect appropriate analysis and contribute to the strategic and financial goals of the organizations
  • Performs other activities as mutually agreed
Administration & Project Management
  • Takes the lead on all operating and project grants from the preparation of applications, to the submission of final reports; and liaises with all funding bodies
  • Collaborates with the Artistic Directors and coordinates vendors, contractors, staff and volunteers to support all programming activities and ensures that artistic objectives are met
  • Prepares contracts for staff and freelance collaborators, and coordinates to completion
  • Coordinates respective Board meeting schedules, attends and takes minutes at meetings and maintains documents
  • Responds to daily correspondence, including emails and phone calls
  • Coordinates all aspects of touring activities, including booking flights, accommodations and preparing itineraries
  • Develops marketing and communication strategies and oversees education and outreach, communications, publicity materials, website, house programs, and e-newsletters
  • Develops and maintains supportive, sustainable and respectful language and working relationships in the organizations and with the dance community and public-at-large; attends selected networking events to build relationships with partners, sponsors, and presenters
Fundraising & Development
  • Designs and implements strategies to increase revenue and seeks new areas of financial revenue within the scope of Company activities
  • Researches new funding opportunities from public and private sources
  • Collaborates with the Artistic Directors on fundraising and development to support growing sustainable patron loyalty
  • Recruits new community and corporate partners for donations, sponsorships and in-kind support
  • Actively participates in fundraising activities by communicating with donors, potential donors and sponsors throughout the season, soliciting their continued support to enable growth
  • Stewards relationships with multiple stakeholders, including donors, sponsors, politicians, volunteers
  • Develops and supports fundraising initiatives and creates annual donor receipts
Human Resources
  • Updates HR policies in collaboration with respective Artistic Directors and Boards of Directors
  • Coordinates recruitment processes and training of new staff ensuring team members understand their roles, responsibilities, and performance standards, supports onboarding of contractors and part-time staff, coaching, and support
  • Provides coordination and oversight of contracted personnel in carrying out plans and policies as approved by the respective Boards of Directors
  • Addresses concerns as they arise, and liaises with the respective Artistic Directors and Boards to support timely resolution
