Job PostingHalifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for tow part-time/casual positions of Multi-Service Youth Centre Worker with Parks & Recreation. Under the supervision of the Youth Centre Coordinator and Community Recreation Coordinator, the Youth Centre Worker will support operations of The Hive Youth Centre in Captain William Spry Community Centre.The Hive is a vibrant, youth-driven community space for ages 13-18, offering a safe and welcoming environment where young people can connect, socialize, learn, and express themselves. From arts and crafts, cooking and baking, and video or board games to sports programs, table tennis, and pool, every day brings new opportunities for creative and engaging activities.We are looking for a responsible, patient, and community-minded Youth Worker who thrives in dynamic environments and enjoys mentoring young people. In this hands-on role, you will build positive relationships with youth, lead both casual and organized activities, gather youth feedback, and help shape a youth-led culture at The Hive. Responsibilities include facilitating drop-in programming, supporting youth interests, preparing snacks, managing behaviours, and connecting young people to supports when needed. You will work collaboratively with staff, partners, and external organizations to maintain a safe, inclusive, and empowering space for all.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Create and maintain a safe and inclusive space. (Both inside and outside the Centre)
  • Assist in planning and facilitating drop-in activities and recreation programs
  • Engage youth during programming and play an active role in managing behaviour, group dynamics, and resolving conflicts.
  • Build relationships and be a good role model.
  • Provide resource and referral support to youth (both internal and external supports)
  • Support in daily operations by contributing to cooking, cleaning/maintenance, and laundry.
  • Take part in daily debriefings and monthly meetings.
  • Support in administrative duties including but not limited to: counting inventory, tracking and reporting condition of equipment, maintaining a daily logbook and sign in-sheets, and completing incident/accident reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Current certification in Emergency First Aid and Level C CP
  • Experience with at risk youth between the ages of 13-18 years of age from diverse socio economic and cultural backgrounds. Including youth who have experienced trauma.
  • Experience working with youth who are members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
  • Experience working within a harm reduction framework.
  • Experience facilitating educational and/or recreational programs in one or more of the following areas considered an asset: life skills development, first aid, cooking, physical media arts, sports, games, and music.
  • A suitable combination of training and experience may be considered.
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of current services available for youth in HRM
  • Knowledge of youth engagement strategies
  • Excellent communication skills and capacity for setting and maintaining boundaries
  • Experience in leadership and group facilitation considered an asset
  • Knowledge of harm reduction frameworks and trauma informed care/services considered and asset
  • Mental Health First Aid, substance awareness training, suicide prevention training considered an asset
Conditions of Employment:
  • Applicants must be willing to obtain Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training Applicants my complete screening though the Child Abuse Registry and a Criminal record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check.

  • Copies of certification must be submitted upon hiring

With Seasonal shifts on Wednesday and Friday Fall/Winter/Spring. Drop-In shifts are 5 hours long 3:00pm-8:00pm. Seasonal Shifts vary. Hours subject to change as we increase programming.
