Individually these are just words, but together they are our Values – Care, Commitment, Community, and Confidence.Aviva has an excellent opportunity within our Central Technical Unit for a Senior Commercial Property Underwriting Manager, in Western Canada.You will provide expertise in building out portfolio performance to facilitate GCS & ABI business success and improve Commercial Property Line of Business outcomes. Facilitate underwriting excellence by ensuring that GCS & ABI teams have the right tools, analytics, and guidelines. Tailor our risk appetite and technical underwriting strategies for the Commercial Property Line of Business to meet the needs of Aviva commercial clients across Corporate Specialty Risks, Portfolio Solutions and Small, Core & Mid-Market. Create a people first culture by focusing time and effort on technical learning and development. Build a dynamic technical community and collaborative culture around knowledge transfer by identifying and connecting subject matter experts across our business. This community will lift underwriting and trading skills across all Commercial Lines of Business.This role can be home-based and can be located either in Calgary / Edmonton / Winnipeg / Vancouver area, with occasional travel within the Western region as and when required.What you'll doDelivering on the strategy and ambition for the Commercial Property Line of Business:Support corporate and regional underwriting objectives, including but not limited to developing and supporting segmentation strategies, retention and rate and exposure targets.Build confidence, enable, empower, coach and mentor to improve quality of Commercial Property underwriting decisions. Support technical training initiatives and guideline simplification.Identify training needs, support design and delivery of training, development, and technical guidance to colleagues regarding products, systems, and processes.Support the continual improvement of underwriting standards through quality control.Collaborate with the Line of Business lead and manage CTU technical property underwriters to ensure delivery of the Commercial Property strategy and ambition. Improving both top and bottom lines, monitoring performance of business to plan, investigating and recommending corrections where needed.Ensure that the Technical Commercial Property Underwriting Guidelines, Canadian Underwriting Appetite Statement, Underwriting Authority Statements and Product Library Policy Wordings are kept up to date and relevant.Monitor trends and developments, identifying areas of concern regarding industry segment performance, rate and retention at the industry segment level, loss ratios, risk trends, or other discrepancies within the company.Work closely with the Pricing Team to ensure our pricing and PRISM segmentation models are driving the desired outcomes.Ensuring Controls are designed effectively and are suitable for the business, and ensuring they are met. Ensure UW process is followed to deliver a quality insurance product.Ensure all non-Aviva wordings are reviewed in a timely manner and resources are allocated to prevent any potential delay in providing a timely response, including claims and legal review.Ensure business units and CTU service standards are achieved and maintained.Consult with senior underwriting staff regarding unique or unusual risks to minimize adverse risk selection and maintain the quality and profitability of the portfolio.Act as a resource on risks outside of the authority level of each region and authorize risks within own established authority levels and ensure authority levels are maintained, provide solution-oriented responses to support field underwriters on individual customer referrals. Provide quality customer service to key stakeholders, including clarification of coverage, wordings, and claims history.Assist with introduction and communication of underwriting strategies, coverage and/or product changes promptly.Work to enhance regional understanding and knowledge of Risk & Control procedures and objectives.Maintain working knowledge of all Information Systems/Programs within Underwriting and Claims and analyse/recommend improvements to work processes and procedures.Develop and maintain a knowledge and understanding of company operations and procedures, including demographic, economic, and social characteristics to increase market share.Maintain knowledge of industry trends, developments, and regulatory changes, including competitive analysis and information, and ensure that all necessary management systems are updated and current.What you'll bring10+ years of Commercial Lines Underwriting experience.Working knowledge of company underwriting philosophy, policy contracts, rating programs, risk information sources, technical underwriting guidelines, risk information, statuary constraints, and computer workflow procedures.Working knowledge of other functional areas (i.e. Claims, Legal, Pricing, Broker Distribution, ARMS, QA Governance & Risk)Post-secondary education or equivalent combination of education and experience.
