- Reviews and supervises students practice nursing procedures and skills during skill class sessions after theory content and initial demonstration completed by faculty.
- Assists students through one-on-one or small group demonstrations.
- Gives students direction and feedback concerning their skill and/or performance.
- Evaluates students in competency appraisal and assigns pass or fail grade.
- Assists students who have been absent from theory class and demonstration to acquire the techniques of the skill missed.
- Provides students with remedial review and practice of specific technical skills, upon practice instructor referral.
- Provides report to the practice instructor about the student progress and performance.
- Provides assistance to students practicing independently to develop basic skill-related scenarios adjusted for different clinical areas and for the strength and weakness of students.
- Sets up and dismantles, cleans, stores, reseals and recycles supplies, materials, equipment, and instructional aids.
- Maintains sufficient levels of laboratory supplies, materials and equipment; inventories items annually.
- Requisitions the purchase of related supplies, materials and equipment through the Purchasing department.
- Cleans and tidies the Nursing Simulation Centre (NSC) to ensure a safe working environment for students and staff.
- Cleans, lubricates and exchanges worn or used equipment parts/items with replacement items/parts.
- Maintains supplies, materials, and equipment such as textbooks and the AV equipment dedicated to the NSC.
- Coordinates laboratory space use with other College departments.
- Duplicates and distributes written materials utilized in the laboratory such as Nurse Notes, Dr. order sheets, IV calculation sheets and I/O sheets.
- Creates anatomic models of health conditions described in practice scenarios, i.e. ostomy and complex wounds.
- Reviews supply catalogues and suggests items for purchase and investigates cost of new equipment.
- Orients SWAP student to duties of position, delegates tasks, and reviews their work.
- Familiarizes new faculty to NSC.
- Attends related meetings to provide information and/or input toward ongoing program development and curriculum.
- Performs related financial support duties such as processing related purchase order and cheque requisitions, accounts payable/receivable tasks and liaises with the purchasing and accounting departments, as required.
- Performs clerical support duties such as preparing correspondence, photocopying documents, maintaining related files and reception tasks such as in-person, telephone and/or e-mail inquiries.
- Meets with the Department Chairperson to communicate related issues and/or concerns, as required.
- Keeps own nursing knowledge and skills current by reading related nursing technical materials.
- Attends related education training sessions, as approved.
- Attends faculty meetings and other department meetings, as required.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing from a recognized educational institution.
- Current membership with British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM)
- Two to four years of recent medical, acute care and/or surgical nursing experience including computer operations as applied to the Nursing field and experience providing practical instruction within a teaching environment.
- Experience maintaining a physical inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Ability to demonstrate all nursing procedures and skills taught in the program effectively.
- Ability to operate related equipment such as laboratory, NSC audiovisual equipment and related software applications within a computerized windows operating environment.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Ability to organize and prioritise work.
- Ability to effectively supervise, direct and lead others.
- Ability to maintain a standard of absolute confidentiality regarding information and records.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work harmoniously with others.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
