(employee will be working with or have access to children or vulnerable adults and requires a Criminal Record Check)Required for Professional RegistrationJob DescriptionIn accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.Working as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team, the Surgical Care Nurse functions as an experienced self-directed surgical care nurse by assessing, planning, providing, and evaluating nursing care for assigned patients.QUALIFICATIONS:Education, Training And ExperienceRegistration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant; andPost-basic education in surgical/ambulatory care nursing on a unit specific basis; orAn equivalent combination of education and training.Up to two (2) years recent, related experience on a unit specific basis.Basic Life Support, Level CSkills And Abilities
  • Apply nursing process as required and described in BC College of Nurses and Midwives Standards of Nursing Practice
  • Demonstrate sound organizational, problem solving, and teaching skills
  • Demonstrate sound judgement, observation and patient assessment skills
  • Demonstrate tact and empathy
  • Prioritize and organize patient demands made and care needs
  • Operate related equipment
  • Remain calm and respond appropriately in stressful and emergency situations
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary health care team
  • Foster good public relations
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Physically able to perform the duties of the position
  • Work independently, with limited supervision
