- Monitor the health of all animals by taking daily walks through kennel areas, and in consultation with the kennel staff or veterinarian, makes referrals for veterinary treatment as required;
- Complete health examinations of all animals;
- Monitor, with the assistance of kennel attendants, all animals for general grooming and care needs;
- Responsible for follow-up on veterinarian's orders regarding care/treatment of animals and is responsible for ensuring that complete medical records are maintained for animals under veterinary care and/or medical treatment;
- Vaccinate animals and perform treatments as required;
- Maintain records as assigned (i.e. euthanasia, drug usage, medicines, vaccines, etc.)
- Administer care and treatment as required
- Ensure that animals requiring veterinary attention and treatment or other special care and/or tests are provided with such care and treatment in a timely fashion;
- Assist with staff education regarding animal care and treatment and disease prevention and control;
- Offer assistance and advice to other staff regarding animal isolation needs, medical care and treatment, and movement of animals;
- Monitor, order and record cost of drugs including controlled drugs, supplies as required and perform year-end inventory as assigned;
- Provides daily care to animals (feeding, watering, cleaning, cages, washing the dishes and equipment, etc.);
- Perform basic lab work as required
- Perform emergency first-aid to animals to stabilize for transportation to vet;
- Respond to calls regarding injured animals, picking up if required when Animal Protection Officer's are occupied on other calls, or not on duty;
- Ensure cleanliness by performing cleaning duties and sanitizing for disease control purposes;
- Wash cages, equipment, walls, floors, etc.;
- Assist the Veterinarians in the performance of surgeries;
- Perform other duties required by the Director or Manager.
- Graduate of a two-year animal health technician or veterinary health technician college program or a three-year veterinary health technologist college program.
- Eligible for registration with the Association of Veterinary Technologists.
- Ability to recognize signs/symptoms of disease and to handle injured animals with a minimum risk;
- Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Must have good interpersonal and organizational skills and must demonstrate an ability and willingness to adhere to good standards of operational procedures, productivity and time management;
- Knowledge of computers and applications
- High degree of resourcefulness, flexibility, and adaptability.
