Job DescriptionMAJOR DUTIES:The Service Mechanical Designer (SMD) is responsible for all mechanical design activity in the ATS Wixom technical services department. Responsible for making design changes for retrofit projects, generating concept design, releasing drawings for production, providing input for quoting design work effort, and supporting the service team.SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:· A working knowledge of common machine shop techniques.· Must have a thorough knowledge of drafting principles.· Must be proficient in AutoCAD and Solid Works.· Must be capable of designing tooling from sketches or verbal concepts.· Must be capable of working as part of a team.· A thorough knowledge of the use of pneumatics and hydraulics.· A thorough knowledge of the use of electrical devices (i.e. switches, load cells, LVDT’s, etc.).· Must be capable of giving and taking direction.· Must demonstrate an ability to conceptualize and create solutions for complex design issues.· Able to independently complete all specific responsibilities with minimal supervision.· Produce working drawings, detail drawings and bills of materials for equipment, sub-assemblies or product, using AutoCAD and Solid Works.· Select appropriate purchased components for mechanical assemblies and create requisitions with appropriate delivery dates.· Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to determine shape, dimensions, hardness etc. in the development of equipment, processes and products.· Review drawings for accuracy, material selection, proper machining techniques, finishes, hardness, etc.· Formalize and update drawing documentation.· Organize documentation, including quotes, drawing registers, correspondence, requisitions, drawings, schedules, etc. on projects you are assigned to.· Review electrical requirements with respect to input and output devices with electrical designers.· Perform engineering calculations with respect to strength of materials, speeds, horsepower, temperature, pressure, force, etc. as related to machine and tool designs.· Examine feasibility of using one or more machines to carry out sequential operations.· Analyze designs and systems for compliance to applicable standards (i.e. OSHA, CE or customer specific).· Liaise with customers and in-house technical and engineering staff.· Liaise with vendors for technical information and specifications.· Communicate all requested design changes to the Project Manager.· Responsible for communicating progress on tasks to the Manager, Technical Services.· Create drawings of existing tooling through the use of precision measuring devices such as verniers and micrometers.· Responsible for communicating time estimates and resource requirements on design tasks to the Manager, Technical Services and Project Manager.Additional InformationEducation:· A post-secondary diploma or degree in mechanical design, mechanical engineering or equivalent.Experience:A minimum of 5 years of mechanical design experience.Must be a good communicator, displays professionalism and has well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to work with all levels of customer and ATS management in a multi-disciplined engineering environment under pressure. Excellent automation knowledge is an asset. Attention to detail and being well organized in engineering document management system is essential. Must have experience and be proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel.
