We strive to create lasting positive impacts by embracing Indigenous values, traditions, and practices throughout our work.ROLE SUMMARYReporting to the Manager of Preconstruction & Funding, the Estimator is responsible for the creation of budgets and estimates produced in the organization. The successful candidate will provide critical and strategic input on procedures, processes, techniques, and personnel decisions for assigned projects. Working closely with the Manager of Preconstruction & Funding,, they will oversee department standards for deliverables such as bid packages, deliverable formats, and budget tracking tools.Critical to this role is someone who exhibits leadership, team-building, and decision-making abilities. The successful candidate will build credibility with Hill Plain’s Leadership Team, and key external partners, be a confident communicator, and thrive in a growth-motivated culture.Hours of work are Monday to Friday – 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.Travel to projects is required.DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESReview contract documents including general conditions, tender forms, drawings and required price breakdownsIn conjunction with the finance department, assess bonding and insurance requirements to ensure that bid submission requirements are metIdentify ambiguities and unique technical requirements of the bid or as put forward by the bid team and addresses them with the appropriate consultants where requiredDevelop a bid preparation schedule identifying the tasks, assignments and deadlinesDevelop takeoffs in a way that is aligned with tracking requirements for job cost and scheduleRequest quotes, identify subcontractors, estimate project expenses, and coordinate bid preparation with all in-house departmentsSubmit final bids after ensuring quality and completeness and in accordance with the instructions to biddersCoordinate compilation of the estimating files at bid closeEvaluate proposed construction methodologies to determine the best solutions based on cost, quality and availability of materialsEnsure the estimate file is finalized and reviewed with the Manager of Preconstruction & FundingWork with the Project Managers and Accountants to prepare job tracking dataPresent finished cost estimates to Manager of Preconstruction & Funding, Operations Manager & CEO and provide input based on strategic market intelligenceProvide guidance and assistance to the Project Manager on specific items related to the project bid/award phaseLead and participate in any lessons learned or post project reviews upon substantial completion of the projectReview and analyze actual project costing and production information against estimates and develops historical databases relationshipMaintain and foster key sub trade and partner relationshipsPromote leadership in the development and advancement of estimating department team membersOngoing review of estimating standards and strategies, suggesting process improvement and oversight for efficiencies and competitive advantageOther duties as assignedREQUIREMENTS & SKILLSConstruction, Engineering or Business Degree or Diploma required10+ years in construction estimating in similar marketsGold Seal Certification in estimating is preferredConceptual estimating and BIM knowledge considered an assetExperience working in the Edmonton marketplace strongly preferredThorough knowledge of corporate objectives impacting estimating strategies and techniques and construction contracts requiredProficient use of multiple technical and estimating software packages (i.e.,B2W, AutoDesk, etc.)Knowledge and experience in developing labour, equipment and other construction cost ratesAbility to breakdown construction operations into a logical sequence of activitiesExpertise with cost estimating processes and standards for diverse project values and various contract typesAbility to make decisions in a timely manner, sometimes with incomplete data and under tight deadlines and pressureMethodical, accurate and high attention to detailStrong interpersonal and relationship building skillsStrong problem solving and analytical skills and the desire to seek solutionsExcellent communications and organizational skillsComfortable working with both internal and external clients, customers and key stakeholdersKEY COMPETENCIESCommunication: Strong writing skills for proposal drafting, and effective oral communication skills to assign tasks and sections to other team members or departments for completion.Organization: Managing the different parts of bids and multiple proposals all at once, and organize a cohesive document for submission.Technical Writing: Experience and knowledge of word processing software to format documents, create content, and plan proposals.Attention to detail: Review and finalize proposals by identifying the intricacies of the client's requests and correcting errors or inconsistencies in the document.Creativity: Design new and captivating ways to present information to ensure proposals are appealing to prospective clients and demonstrate the abilities of the organization and the proposed team members.Project management: Time and project management skills to consistently meet the submission deliverables and deadlines.Editing skills: Review documents and make revisions for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.Teamwork and collaboration: Must be able to collaborate effectively and efficiently with multiple contributors and conduct various levels of review before submission.Powered by JazzHR
