About the ChoirToronto Mendelssohn Choir (TMChoir) is proud to be one of Canada’s oldest, largest, and best-known choral organizations. The choir presented its first concert on January 15, 1895, as part of Massey Hall’s inaugural season, and has been a leader in choral music in Canada ever since, commissioning works by Canadian composers, and presenting world and Canadian premieres. The choir also regularly performs and records with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. In May 2021, Jean-Sébastien Vallée was named as Artistic Director, only the eighth conductor in TMChoir’s 130-year history.Through its performances, educational programs, and community engagement, TMChoir aspires to introduce its audiences to choral masterworks from the past and present—and make both renowned and lesser-known pieces available, accessible, and inspirational to all.TMChoir includes a core of professional singers and more than 140 auditioned and experienced volunteer choristers. The smaller professional ensemble, the Toronto Mendelssohn Singers (TMSingers), was created to deliver more intimate repertoire in a variety of nontraditional venues.Position OverviewThe Managing Director is the senior administrative leader of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and is responsible for the organization’s operational, financial, and strategic management. Working in close partnership with the Artistic Director and the Board of Directors, the Managing Director ensures the long-term sustainability, visibility, and impact of the Choir while supporting the realization of its artistic vision.The Managing Director oversees all administrative and operational functions of the organization, including program operations, development, marketing, finance, governance, human resources, and external relations. The role also serves as a principal ambassador for the Choir within the arts community, with patrons, funders, sponsors, and strategic partners.This position reports to the Board of Directors and works closely with the Artistic Director in a collaborative leadership model.Key ResponsibilitiesOperations & Administrative Leadership
  • Provide overall leadership and management of the Choir’s administrative operations, ensuring effective and efficient organizational performance.
  • Oversee operational planning and execution for concerts, events, tours, and special initiatives in collaboration with artistic and production leadership.
  • Serve as a co-owner and steward of the organization’s strategic plan, working with the Artistic Director and Board to implement strategic priorities and monitor progress.
  • Lead organizational planning processes including operational planning, annual goal setting, and performance evaluation.
  • Ensure that systems, policies, and procedures support a professional and sustainable arts organization.
Public Relations, Development and Fundraising Strategy
  • Serve as a principal public representative of the Choir, strengthening its profile within the cultural community and among audiences, partners, and funders.
  • Lead relationships with key partners, sponsors, donors, foundations, and government agencies.
  • Promote strong relationships with choristers, recognizing their central role in the Choir’s artistic success.
  • Develop and oversee a comprehensive fundraising strategy encompassing public funding, corporate and private philanthropy, sponsorship, and special events.
  • Work closely with the Board of Directors to support their engagement in fundraising and relationship-building activities.
Marketing and Communications
  • Oversee the organization’s marketing, storytelling and communications strategy to expand audience reach and strengthen the Choir’s brand.
  • Guide initiatives that promote concerts, recordings, educational activities, and special projects.
  • Ensure effective management of ticket sales, audience engagement, and patron relationship management systems.
Governance & Board Relations
  • Serve as the primary staff liaison to the Board of Directors.
  • Support the Board in fulfilling its responsibilities through strong communication, planning, and reporting.
  • Act as Board Secretary, overseeing governance documentation, meeting preparation, minutes, and regulatory filings.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and charitable reporting requirements.
  • Support Board committees and contribute to governance best practices.
Financial Management
  • Lead the financial operations of the organization, including budgeting, forecasting, financial monitoring, and reporting.
  • Ensure strong financial oversight and fiscal responsibility in partnership with the Board
  • Ensure effective financial controls, risk management practices, and long-term financial sustainability.
Operations and Administrative Team Management and Growth
  • Build a high performing programming, operations and administration team to deliver TMChoir’s strategic and operational plans
  • Provide leadership and supervision to administrative staff and contractors.
  • Oversee recruitment, performance management, and professional development.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing workplace culture.
