We invite and welcome people to show up as their authentic selves; we develop people in ways that matter most to them; we build communities that connect people to what brings them joy; we create accessible and inclusive spaces, places, and programs; and we establish relationships that foster a sense of belonging.The Climbing Monitor is responsible for supervising day-to-day operations in the MRU Climbing Centre. Ensuring the safety of all users while providing a memorable customer experience are required at all times in this role. The ability to effectively manage risks inherent to climbing, attention to detail, and a passion for community building are integral to success in this position. Competence in top rope and lead climbing risk management, including belay techniques with both aperture and assisted braking devices (eg, ATC & GriGri) is an asset.ResponsibilitiesCustomer Experience (45%)Greet and sign participants into the facilityConduct facility orientations and belay tests for both top rope and lead climbingSign out rental equipment and ensure it is returned and put awayCreate authentic relationships with climbing participants to increase a sense of belonging and gather feedbackRisk Management (45%)Present waivers, ensure accurate completion and understanding, and answer any related questionsActively supervise the Climbing Centre, ensuring policies are being followed and that all climbers and belayers are following safety best practicesProvide coaching and corrective instruction on techniques as necessaryOpen and/or close the facility, performing regular checks and equipment storageAccessibility and Inclusion (10%)Ensure programs and services are developed and executed with accommodation for access needsEnsure people with varying abilities and circumstances feel a sense of belonging in Recreation programs and servicesQualifications
  • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 1-6 months of relevant previous experience
  • Current Mount Royal University student
  • Competence in top rope and lead climbing risk management, including belay techniques with both aperture and assisted braking devices (eg. ATC & GriGri)
  • Standard First Aid & CPR-C certification preferred
