Distribution System Operator (Trainee)JMS High Voltage Inc (JMS) are recruiting for a Distribution System Operator (DSO) to support our growing team. Our firm is under contract to one of the largest electrical distribution utilities in Canada, based in the Toronto area. You will be responsible for performing manual switching operations on circuits up to 27.6KV to isolate or energize sections of the power grid, ensuring safe working conditions for various workgroups performing maintenance or repairs. This is an entry level training role that will help our team expand for future growth.Since 2015, JMS has been operating as switching agents supporting the maintenance and construction the Toronto electrical distribution system. We specialize in the operation of the downtown core dual radial style of electrical distribution system. Our work ensures that the Utility and its contractors can access isolated/de-energized system circuits to complete their construction or maintenance work on schedule and the overall system is exposed to minimal reliability risk.We are seeking a team-oriented individual worthy of our significant in-house training investment. The candidate requires excellent communication, as well as technical and problem-solving skills to join our dynamic work environment. In this role you will be expected to collaborate effectively, work safely, maintain training credentials and be available to complete work assignments as scheduled, any day of the week.Responsibilities
  • Following EUSA rules and the Utility Work Protection Code, from orders to operate, Power System Controllers, and other instruction streams, you will isolate and restores circuits up to 27.6kV to facilitate installation, repair and maintenance of system equipment.
  • Perform tests on and troubleshoot station equipment and distribution circuits.
  • Perform switching operations, operate station equipment, grounding and tagging operations.
  • Update and prepare reports, records and documents pertaining to the position
  • Computer skills, reads prints, navigate city work routes, and follow all procedures.
  • Communicate directly with building representatives and contractors.
  • Communicate regularly and report hazardous conditions to the System Control.
  • Complete and maintain qualification accreditations. (1st Aid/CPR, UWPC, etc)
Training Candidate Qualifications
  • Community college graduate from an Electrical Engineering Technician/Technologist program or Candidates with other formally accredited electrical qualifications, such as Power Line persons, Power Cable Persons, Power System Controller, Sub-Station Electricians, Industrial/Construction & Maintenance Electrician (309A), PEng are preferred.
  • Utility and field experience is an additional consideration.
  • Class G Driver's Licence (maintained as a requirement and condition of employment)
  • Ability to complete and maintain classroom and field training qualifications.
Compensation
  • Trainees are compensated with an hourly Trainee starting rate, including classroom time. A fully trained DSO can expect an annual compensation range of $125-200K depending on work volume.
