- Maintain a sound knowledge of current ArcelorMittal (AM) Global products to recommend solutions to customers’ requested product needs, and negotiate as required, with customers and AM North America business units to implement a suitable match.
- Participate in analyzing market trends and forecasting and defining customer product needs. Communicate this understanding within AM and under supervision of management recommend projects and priorities for global new product development or Global R&D activities.
- Participate in the development of new solutions as part of new product development teams in North America. Participate in the commercialization of these solutions to provide AM North America with new profitable business opportunities in alignment with the AM North America strategic plan.
- Identify novel technologies throughout the AM organization and pilot their transfer and commercialization in North America.
- Achieve technical source approvals from customers to allow for the commercial supply of products, ensuring all approvals are consistent with AM North America commercial group needs. This includes recommending the development of new qualification procedures and characterization techniques.
- Analyze customer products and processes in a team and recommend and implement cost savings opportunities or product improvements (co-engineering), by applying sound engineering principles independently, or by leading a team of subject matter experts.
- Maintain awareness of regulatory codes, standards and material specifications to ensure AM North America product capabilities comply and negotiate changes with agencies and customers so these requirements do not impair the profitability of AM North America products in the marketplace.
- Participate in trade association and regulatory agency activities to ensure steel remains a viable material choice for our customers’ product needs. Participate in the development of and recommend responses to the opportunities in steel market growth and threats to exclude steel from the market.
- Facilitate and provide local expertise of the application technology capabilities of Global R&D, and interface with our customers to promote and utilize these technologies to create value for the customer and AM.
- Determine the value creation for assigned projects, to be used by AM North America commercial teams, when negotiating commercial contracts with AM North America customers.
- Initiate customer contacts and respond to wide ranging customer inquiries (e.g. technical seminars, material characteristics, specifications, trial steel supply, testing, etc.), by engaging global AM representatives to enable AM North America to achieve a #1 technical rating from our customers.
- Contribute to and execute the AM North American Customer Strategy (in conjunction with Sales and Marketing), to optimize business and return maximum value to AM.
- Demonstrates a strong commitment to health and safety practices in all aspects of work.
- Sound knowledge of steel products is required.
- Extensive knowledge of steel manufacturing and its effect on material properties and steel performance is required.
- Sound knowledge of customer processes including design, forming (stamping, roll forming, etc.), joining (welding, bonding, etc.) and painting is required.
- Sound knowledge of the relevant market and industry specifications are required.
- Sound knowledge of competitive (steel and non-steel) materials and products is required.
- Strong engineering, creative, analytical and problem-solving skills are required.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills and a high level of integrity are required.
- Strong initiative and ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Good negotiating skills are required.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
- Strong organizational skills, and the ability to handle multiple demands are required.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment is required.
- Adaptability to change is required.
- Minimum bachelor’s degree in engineering or science in the field of metallurgy, materials, civil, mechanical, or chemical is required.
- An advanced degree (MSc, PhD) in a similar field is an asset.
- Minimum six years of relevant industrial experience is required.
- Office environment.
- This position is eligible for remote work in accordance with our Flexible Work Options policy.
- Occasional AM North America plant or laboratory.
- Occasional outside processors and customer manufacturing facilities.
- Infrequent travel to the United States is required.
