Ensuring the future through cultural, social and economic developmentJOB SUMMARY
The purpose of the Certified Education Assistant is to support the Classroom Teacher in activities inside and
outside the classroom. The Certified Education Assistant will provide a solid and safe foundation which
fosters the student's physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and cultural development.
SUPPORTS NEEDED
  • Assist teachers with organization of materials and lesson preparation
  • Assist teachers with small group instruction under the direction of the classroom teacher
  • Provide one to one support for students in literacy and math and other areas as requested
  • Assist teachers in identifying ways to help and support student learning outcomes
  • Seek information about student needs, academic and behaviour, from the classroom staff in order to
provide the support needed
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to Classroom Teacher regarding student progress and
student needs
  • Follow and provide input into Individual Education Plans and SMART Goals while continually
assessing student progress and recommending adjustments to ensure IEP goals are met
  • Assist in managing classroom expectations through positive reinforcement and modeling
  • Be a positive role model for behaviour; practice respectful student/adult and adult/adult
interactions
  • Supervise outside play at recess and lunch, while on fieldtrips, and assist in other supervision duties
as required
  • Manage incidents involving students to ensure children have a safe and secure environment
  • Clear schoolyard of debris to ensure student safety
  • Secure gates to the schoolyard after bringing students inside and after school
  • Assist students to develop life skills, including communication, problem-solving, decision-making, selfcontrol, and coping with stress and emotions
  • With training provided by an OT or PT, administer physical exercise programs recommended by an
OT/PT
  • Administer medications to students as assigned and authorized
  • All persons employed by the Okanagan Indian Band may be required to assist the Band in
providing emergency services. Duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties
  • Perform other duties as required
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES
  • Monitor, record, and report on student success and behaviours
  • Report student absences to the Administrative Assistant
  • Support teachers with planning and preparation, including filing, photocopying, laminating, etc.
  • Attend staff meetings and professional development day training
  • Communicate to educators any pertinent information regarding children, parents, staff, program etc.
including incident and first aid reporting
  • Communicate with the Lead Teacher any concerns, or Principal/Vice Principal when suitable
  • Keep informed of current trends for students with learning or behaviour challenges
  • Participate in community events as requested
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the OKIB policies and procedures
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR
You have education, experience, or carry a willingness to learn. You are community-minded, detail-oriented,
and an excellent communicator.
Education
▪ Grade 12 diploma
▪ Certified Education Assistant preferred, or willing to obtain
▪ Current First Aid/CPR certificate or willing to obtain
Experience
▪ Two years of experience as an Education Assistant is preferred or ECE experience
▪ Experience working with elementary aged students
▪ Experience working with First Nations communities
CLASSIFICATION/PAY SCALE
$22.00 – $31.00 per hour dependant on education and experience
Preference will be given to qualified Aboriginal Applicants as per section 41 of the Human Rights Code.
