For more information on diversity and inclusion, please visit:For more information about the Ministry of Environment and Protected Areas (EPA), please visit our website at: .Role ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Provincial Recovery Specialist, the Conservation Geneticist is responsible for the development and application of advanced genetic tools to recover and manage the three native trout species at risk in Alberta, Bull Trout, Athabasca Rainbow Trout and Westslope Cutthroat Trout, through the Native Trout Recovery Program. The Native Trout Recovery program is involved in assessing the genetic characteristics of trout populations, understanding potential risks to current and future genetic integrity and assessing potential management options.Responsibilities include:
- Developing advanced genetic tools for native trout.
- Developing genetics guidance frameworks for the management of native trout species.
- Assessing native trout population genetics.
- Tracking genetic specimens and data.
- Effectively communicating information on genetics to non-technical audiences.
- Masters degree in a related field such as conservation biology, ecology, zoology, wildlife management, resource management, genetics and microbiology.
- Minimum 2 years of related experience in applied fish or wildlife population genetics using genome-scale datasets (i.e., single nucleotide polymorphisms).
- Ph.D. in a scientific discipline related to the position.
- University graduation in a related field, plus 4 years related experience.
- In-depth understanding of principles from population genetics, evolutionary biology and systematics relating to fish and wildlife resource management.
- Experience completing analyses to estimate genetic diversity, introgression and differentiation in wildlife populations using a variety of genetic markers, including genome-scale datasets.
- Experience developing and characterizing novel genetic markers.
- Experience designing sampling strategies, implementing data collections, data analyses, and reporting on results relating to genetic assessments of fish and wildlife.
- Experience working with freshwater fish, particularly salmonids.
- Proficiency in the use of MS Office, constructing and implementing bioinformatic pipelines and application of statistical software packages, such as R, bash or perl,
- An understanding of species at risk conservation management in Alberta and familiarity with the issues and challenges related to recovery of native trout.
- Ability to provide recommendations for maintaining genetic integrity of fish hatchery stocks and experience in trout recovery stocking projects is desirable, but not required.
