The team leads the preparation and consolidation of UBC’s audited financial statements and statutory reports to senior leadership, government bodies and external stakeholders. Financial Reporting supports strategic decision-making through accurate financial data, analysis and insights, and plays a central role in institutional accountability, risk management, and long-term financial sustainability. The department also leads the coordination of the annual financial audit and serves as a key steward of the Universities fiscal reputation.The Senior Financial Analyst position prepares the University’s consolidated quarterly and annual financial statements, regulatory submissions and various annual regulatory reporting requirements. This position also prepares the audited annual financial statements and the related note disclosures and advises auditors regarding information requests, this includes: the preparation of complex analysis to explain variances, investigate exceptions, assess correct accounting treatment and identifying process improvements. The Senior Financial Analyst will develop and implement new policies and procedures to improve financial management and business processes throughout the portfolio.Organizational StatusReporting to the Manager, Financial Reporting, the position will work closely with all members on the Financial Reporting team and partner with other finance leadership within the University, including the Capital Financial Management and Reporting group, Comptroller’s Office, Financial Planning & Analysis Office, Treasury, Development and Alumni Engagement, Research Finance.Work Performed1. Prepare Financial Statements and Manage Reporting Cycles - Independently prepare, analyze, and finalize the University's quarterly and annual consolidated financial statements, including supporting schedules, reconciliations, and disclosures. Ensure timely and accurate completion of monthly close and year-end processes in compliance with Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) and University policies.2. Prepare Financial Information for External Stakeholders – Prepare and submit financial and statistical reports for external stakeholders, including provincial and federal governments. Ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with relevant legislation, funding agreements, and reporting requirements.3. Develop and Interpret Accounting Policies - Prepare accounting policy documentation, technical position papers, and memos. Advise stakeholders on the application of accounting standards and promote consistent policy implementation across the University.4. Ensure Proper Stewardship of Restricted Funds - Review monitor transactions for restricted funds, including endowments, research grants, and scholarships to ensure financial activity aligns with donor intent, contractual obligations, and accounting requirements. Prepare reporting5. Support External Audit and Regulatory Compliance - Prepare and submit audit-ready working papers for external audits and regulatory reporting. Serve as a liaison for auditors and government agencies, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with audit standards.6. Provide Financial Training and Stakeholder Support - Offer expert guidance and training to university departments on financial systems, fund usage, and reporting policies. Respond to complex inquiries and promote understanding of institutional financial practices.7. Conduct Strategic Financial Analysis and Executive Reporting - Perform complex financial analyses and prepare executive summaries with actionable recommendations. Provide insights on institutional performance, financial risks, and significant variances to support senior leadership in decision-making.8. Enhance Financial Systems and Reporting Tools - Maintain and improve financial reporting infrastructure using systems such as Workday, Adaptive and PowerBI. Create and optimize queries, reports, and dashboards to meet evolving business requirements and ensure data accuracy.Consequence of Error/JudgementAccounting errors could cause serious inaccuracies in the University s records perhaps resulting in errors in the financial statements. Due to the senior level of this position, financial statement errors could lead to incorrect decisions by the executive and the Board and could damage the reputation of the University, adversely affecting its ability to raise funds. A high degree of judgment, technical expertise and strategic thinking is required.Supervision ReceivedThe Senior Financial Analyst works with a high degree of independence under the direction of the Manager, Financial Reporting.Performance reviewed in terms of accuracy, effectiveness of analyses and reporting, soundness of judgment, adherence to deadlines, achievement of objectives, and problem-solving skills demonstrated.Supervision GivenWhile this role has no direct reports, the Senior Financial Analyst will be involved in reviewing the work of other junior staff, and providing guidance to members of the campus community, where necessary.Minimum Qualifications
University degree in a relevant discipline, Commerce preferred, with completion of a recognized professional accounting designation (CA, CGA, CMA) that is current and accreditation maintained.
Minimum of five (5) years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience working within Public Sector Accounting Standards and Public practice audit experience is an asset.
Experience with Workday or a complex ERP system is an asset.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office with demonstrated experience using advanced data analysis and data retrieval formulas and combinations thereof in Excel. The role will involve a high degree of creativity and innovation using Excel.
Ability to work with large data sets and proficiency with various business intelligence and data analysis tools such as Power Query, Power Pivot, and Power BI is an asset.
Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills along with the ability to exercise sound and rational judgment.
Demonstrated ability to engage with senior levels of management and financial personnel in an organization.
Strong communication and inter-personal skills, especially when explaining complex concepts and processes to a diverse group of individuals, including non-finance staff members.
