As someone with excellent communication skills and business acumen, you will thrive in our fast-paced and agile environment.Dillon’s Natural Resource Management discipline is looking for a Field Technician to fill an existing vacancy within our multidisciplinary team of professionals. In this role, you will have the opportunity to conduct Species at Risk (bird and bat) fatality monitoring under wind turbines at a Wind Farm located in Thunder Bay. This position involves 4 days of monitoring per week from May 1 to September 30 (part-time options may also be available). Responsibilities:
  • Conduct bird and bat carcass searches within a 50-meter radius of wind facility turbines
  • Monitor an average of 10 to 11 turbines per monitoring day
  • Dedicate approximately 20 minutes to searching the base of each wind turbine
  • Travel efficiently to/from facility and Thunder Bay, also between turbines across the facility
  • Handle all carcasses safely using required protective gear
  • Process discovered carcasses and move them outside the project area for disposal
  • Use mobile data collection tools to record comprehensive details for each carcass, including date/time, photo documentation, decomposition state, injury extent, species, age/sex (where possible), distance and direction from the turbine, GPS location, and substrate
  • Upload field data digitally in near-real-time to an online project link
  • Perform all activities under the guidance of an experienced biologist
  • Participate in necessary on-site training, site-specific orientation and Health and Safety training
Qualifications:
  • Strict adherence to facility-specific Health and Safety requirements and completion of site-specific orientations
  • Mandatory participation in project-specific training for handling birds and bats and fatality monitoring
  • Willingness to work in an environment where you may encounter bat carcasses (potential rabies carriers)
  • Proficiency in using mobile devices and GPS features to log field data
  • Commitment to using provided protective equipment during all carcass handling
  • Comfort and capability working outdoors and in inclement weather conditions to conduct physical searches and travel between field locations
Experience:Compensation$25/hr - $35/hrDillon is including the salary range that we in good faith believe may offer for this position. It will be dependent on the successful applicant’s education, experience, and skills, in addition to internal equity and geographic region.
