Job Description:In order to ensure your application is received by NAIT for thorough review and consideration, please apply directly through our Careers site atNOTE: This is a temporary position ending on or before May 15, 2027 with the possibility of extension.NAIT Applied Research is working closely with Indigenous communities across Treaty 6, 7 and 8 to aid them in establishing environmental monitoring programs that fit their needs and which are sustainable. The goal of the program is for communities to gain control over monitoring the health and condition of their local environment and for the communities themselves to be able to develop data-enabled environmental stewardship strategies.Reporting to the Director of Applied Science Operations, the Environmental Monitoring Program Manager will be responsible for managing a portfolio of projects that could require expertise from several scientific disciplines pertinent to monitoring the land and water resources in communities. The Program Manager will be responsible for the overall direction, coordination, implementation, execution, control, and completion of projects, ensuring consistency with partnership strategy, commitments, and goals.Key Accountabilities:
  • The Manager is responsible for a significant portion of strategic planning to ensure growth and sustainability of the program, in close collaboration with applied research leadership and the business development team. The Manager is responsible for overseeing these funds and ensuring they are administered responsibly in close conjunction with the Financial Coordinator assigned to the program.
  • Supervision of all program employees, the number of which may increase in the future as the program expands. The Manager will be required to exert influence on the program team to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Assimilating high-level technical knowledge to engage with partners and communicate in written and verbal form.
  • Project oversight through maintaining awareness of project obstacles, milestone completions, and resource needs and coordination of staff and students.
  • Program growth, overseeing and forecasting the number, type, and growth of project activity within the program. This requires balancing the skill sets and capacity of the staff with the emergent needs of community partners and making strategic decisions that guide the program toward greater capacity and revenue growth.
  • Partner engagement, with regular travel to remote communities expected
Skills & Abilities:
  • Effective project management skills with experience in leading multidisciplinary teams and in managing complex budgets
  • Ability to navigate the funding environment available to post-secondary institutions
  • Advanced technical writing and presentation skills and the ability to write grant proposals
  • Knowledge of Indigenous language, protocols, customs, community perspectives and challenges
  • Knowledge of United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action, and Indian Act
  • An aptitude for recognizing and responding to opportunities for new value creation
Qualifications:
  • Minimum: University degree, Master's (or higher) preferred, in a technical field related to the work done in the program (Analytical Chemistry or similar)
  • Qualification in project management or equivalent with knowledge of project management techniques and tools
  • Minimum of 5 years direct work experience in project management capacity and proven experience in people management, strategic planning, and risk management
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities considered an asset
  • Experience with influencing a team with experience levels ranging from students to technical experts
  • Experience in customer and business development activities considered an asset
  • Principles of financial management
