- Serve as the investment legal advisor to CPP Investments’ capital markets investment groups, working closely with investment professionals on complex investments and investment structures.
- Provide legal and strategic guidance on relationships with external managers and other counterparties, with a focus on hedge funds, including investment structuring decisions, terms, fee arrangements, and governance considerations.
- Provide legal and strategic guidance on public markets investments and trading.
- Lead investment teams through the efficient execution of investments while managing legal risks and aligning with internal standards and market practice.
- Anticipate and solve for legal issues in hedge fund and public market investing, applying logic, creativity, and a commercial mindset.
- Monitor evolving regulatory developments affecting hedge funds, derivatives, and global capital markets, and provide practical input to internal stakeholders.
- Lead or contribute to organization-wide initiatives related to legal policy, risk management, and cross-functional coordination.
- Develop and maintain productive relationships with external counsel, ensuring consistent, high-quality support and efficient execution.
- LL.B./LL.M. or JD required; Canadian or U.S. qualification preferred.
- At least 10 years of relevant legal experience in a leading law firm or in-house legal team at an asset manager or hedge fund platform.
- Deep knowledge of hedge fund structures, securities law, derivatives, prime brokerage, and fund governance.
- Proven ability to offer practical, strategic legal advice that balances risk, commercial objectives, and investment strategy.
- Strong execution skills, with experience coordinating complex transactions and managing multiple stakeholders.
- Comfortable working in a high-performance, fast-paced environment with cross-functional teams.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence, guide, and partner effectively at all levels.
- Creative thinker with excellent judgment, attention to detail, and a strong sense of ownership.
