Job DescriptionAs a Senior Counsel, you will be a key member of the Global Corporate Real Estate Law Team. You will provide advice and strategic guidance to the Royal Bank of Canada Global Corporate Real Estate Team and its business partners on transactional and operational corporate real estate matters including leasing, disposition, construction and environmental matters and play a key strategic role in building tools to manage and mitigate legal risks associated with RBC’s corporate real estate portfolio.What will you do?
  • Provide quality, accurate and tailored legal advice to RBC’s corporate real estate team and stakeholders on broad spectrum of legal risks and mitigation strategies concerning RBC’s global real estate portfolio, including:
  • Transactional legal advice and support on high-risk leasing transactions, dispositions, real property aspects of M&A transactions;
  • Legal guidance on construction-related issues and disputes;
  • Support litigation, mediation and arbitration matters concerning RBC’s corporate real estate.
  • Provide strategic legal guidance on corporate real estate operational risks including third party supplier arrangements, complex commercial contract interpretation, regulatory matters involving commercial real estate;
  • Draft, review, negotiate various commercial real estate agreements and develop templates and legal content;
  • Collaborate with real estate law team to design and deliver legal training to business and functional partners;
  • Build relationships with business partner stakeholders to ensure compliance with enterprise legal guidelines that apply to the business.
What do you need to succeed?Must-have
  • Law degree (LLB or JD) from an accredited law school;
  • Call to the Bar of a Canadian province/territory, a member in good standing with applicable law society
  • 8+ years’ experience in commercial real estate contract drafting and negotiating at a top tier law firm or major real estate corporation;
  • Ability to analyze legal risk in context of business realities, exercise sound judgement and interpersonal skills and effectively advise business partners
  • Excellent foundational commercial real estate expertise and technical acumen in leasing and transaction management;
  • Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy, handle large volumes of work and balance competing demands and navigate uncertainty;
  • Strong knowledge of general commercial contract laws and terms;
  • Ability to analyze legal risk in context of business realities, exercise sound judgement and interpersonal skills and effectively advise business partners; and
  • A collaborative, team-minded approach to legal support.
Nice-to-have
  • In-house experience at a large, multi-national bank or commercial real estate institution;
  • Strong presentation skills (written and verbal) and ability to build relationships across multiple areas of the business;
  • Continuous improvement mindset.
