For over 25 years, Armagh has been giving help and hope to women fleeing abuse. We are committed to creating an environment that supports women and children through their transition, giving them the support and knowledge necessary to redefine a future. Unlike a first stage or crisis shelter, which responds to short-term emergencies, Armagh is a non-profit, supportive transitional housing program, providing housing and services to women with or without children who have been victims of family violence. Armagh provides supportive transitional housing with 9 residential apartments.We are looking for a full-time Child & Youth Worker to join our team and make a positive difference in the lives of women and children in the Region of Peel. This is a one (1) year contract position.The OpportunityUnder the supervision of the Program Manager, the Child and Youth Worker is responsible for providing support to the children and their mothers. The Child and Youth Worker is responsible for a wide range of services that address the impact of abuse on children. Key areas of responsibilities include development of safety strategies and plans, supports, referrals, advocacy, supportive counselling, and programs for the children.Duties and Responsibilities
  • Administer trauma-informed wrap-around case management and counseling services tailored to the unique needs of women and children.
  • Accompany children and their mothers to appointments, offering necessary support and advocacy.
  • Strictly adhere to the Child, Youth, and Family Services Act, particularly emphasizing the "Duty to Report" section.
  • Demonstrate assertiveness and patience in addressing complex and sensitive issues that arise.
  • Assist with school registrations and act as a liaison for addressing any concerns about children's progress.
  • Maintain accurate statistics for children's groups and programs to assess effectiveness.
  • Conduct comprehensive intake and discharge interviews with all clients for thorough understanding and planning.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with children through positive role modeling and mentoring initiatives.
  • Ensure the safety of children's play areas and equipment through regular maintenance and inspection.
  • Provide necessary clothing, toys, and school supplies to children based on their needs.
  • Ensure completeness of intake, discharge, and other essential client information.
  • Handle emergency and crisis situations decisively with clear and prompt actions.
  • Maintain meticulous referral records and ensure the security of client files.
  • Manage client case files and accurately input data into the database (WISH) for effective tracking.
  • Actively participate in committees as required to contribute to organizational goals.
  • Design, develop, and facilitate engaging programs and recreational activities for children.
  • Conduct both individual and group counseling sessions tailored to children's needs.
  • Offer mothers and children comprehensive information, support, and resources, including daycare, schooling, counseling services, and referrals.
  • Document relevant information regarding client plans and progress in client files.
  • Regularly assess children's needs and collaborate with mothers to develop and implement action plans.
  • Engage in on-call rotation to provide immediate support as needed.
  • Empower children with a range of healthy coping mechanisms, problem-solving skills, conflict resolution techniques, communication strategies, and life management skills to promote emotional well-being.
  • Support children in sharing their stories, understanding their rights, building self-esteem, creating safety plans, and learning violence prevention strategies.
  • Foster children's emotional and social development, promoting empathy, positive self-concepts, and understanding of others.
Qualifications
  • Possess a University degree or College Diploma in Child and Youth Studies or a related field, demonstrating a solid academic foundation.
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience working directly with children and youth, showcasing practical expertise.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and experience in child development stages and associated issues, fostering a deeper understanding of individual needs.
  • Showcase proven experience in delivering effective case management and counseling supports, highlighting the ability to address complex challenges sensitively.
  • Exhibit a track record of developing and facilitating engaging programs tailored to the needs of children and youth, fostering their holistic development.
  • Display exceptional ability to juggle multiple tasks with conflicting priorities and deadlines, showcasing adeptness in time management and prioritization.
  • Maintain a meticulous attention to detail, ensuring a high level of accuracy and confidentiality in all tasks, while possessing strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrate a profound awareness and understanding of Violence Against Women and its profound impact on both women and children, emphasizing empathy and sensitivity.
  • Exhibit a keen awareness of organizational safety needs and the importance of maintaining client and agency confidentiality.
  • Possess outstanding communication skills, encompassing active listening, articulate verbal expression, and proficient writing abilities.
  • Excel in organizational skills, time management, and multitasking, effectively managing various responsibilities concurrently.
  • Demonstrate maturity and the ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in a second language relevant to the demographics of Peel Region is advantageous, facilitating effective communication with diverse populations.
  • Showcase proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, streamlining administrative tasks.
  • Hold a valid Driver's License and have access to a reliable vehicle, enabling flexibility in attending appointments and meetings.
  • Possess a valid First Aid/CPR Certification, ensuring readiness to respond to emergencies promptly.
  • Obtain a Vulnerable Sector Police Clearance Certificate and maintain clearance requirements throughout employment, ensuring the safety and security of vulnerable populations.
Physical and Mental EffortBased on the work schedule, the frequency of the following tasks will vary according to need:
  • Ability to lift unsupported up to 25 lbs.
  • Carrying / lifting materials, donations etc. using stairs or elevator
  • Changing priorities and work flow to accommodate needs of others and scheduled/imposed timelines
  • Using a computer, monitor and other office equipment
  • Work effectively with people of varied background including the corporate sector
  • Work independently and with frequent interruptions
