This role sits at the intersection of strategy, technology, and execution-offering a unique platform to influence operational excellence, enhance broker and client experience, and lead high-performing teams in a dynamic, growth-oriented environment.Key ResponsibilitiesAs the AVP, Commercial Underwriting Operations, you will lead the strategy, execution, and continuous improvement of underwriting operations across the commercial business. Your focus will be on building a best-in-class operating model that enhances efficiency, supports underwriting excellence, and enables profitable growth.Your responsibilities will include:
  • Operational Strategy & Execution:
o Develop and implement a national underwriting operations strategy aligned with business objectives, driving consistency, scalability, and efficiency across regions.
o Lead initiatives that enhance workflows, streamline processes, and improve service delivery for both internal stakeholders and broker partners.
  • Team Leadership & Talent Development:
o Build, mentor, and lead high-performing underwriting operations teams, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.
o Oversee recruitment, performance management, and professional development to ensure strong bench strength and technical capability.
  • Process Optimization & Transformation:
o Identify opportunities to improve operational effectiveness through automation, technology adoption, and process redesign.
o Partner with technology, analytics, and underwriting leadership to implement tools and systems that enhance productivity and decision-making.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration:
o Work closely with underwriting, distribution, risk services, and corporate functions to align priorities and support business growth.
o Act as a key liaison to ensure seamless coordination between operations and underwriting teams, enabling superior broker and client experiences.
  • Performance & Portfolio Support:
o Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to service levels, productivity, and operational quality.
o Support underwriting teams in achieving profitability and growth targets by ensuring efficient operational support and data integrity.
  • Governance & Continuous Improvement:
o Ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and internal controls through audit and quality assurance processes.
o Champion a culture of continuous improvement, leveraging data and insights to refine operations and drive measurable outcomes.QualificationsTo succeed in this role, candidates should demonstrate the following:
  • Education & Experience:
o Post-secondary education in Business, Finance, or a related field is preferred.
o 10+ years of experience in commercial insurance, with a strong background in underwriting operations or underwriting leadership.
  • Technical Skills:
o Strong understanding of commercial underwriting processes, multi-line insurance products, and operational workflows.
o Experience with underwriting systems, workflow tools, and data/analytics platforms; exposure to transformation or automation initiatives is an asset.
  • Key Competencies:
o Proven leadership ability with experience building and developing high-performing teams.
o Strategic thinker with a hands-on approach to execution and problem-solving.
o Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence across all levels of the organization.
