- Provides in-house legal services to the City of Saskatoon, including City Council, Committees of Council, the Administration and the City's Boards in a variety of areas including Litigation, Municipal Law, Planning and Administrative Law, Employment Law, Prosecutions, Real Estate, Construction Law and Corporate Law.
- Acts on behalf of the City in civil litigation, administrative law matters and prosecutions at all levels of court and before various Administrative Tribunals.
- Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to develop and implement policies and processes relating to legal matters.
- Coordinates with Divisions on identifying and implementing legal solutions to serve the business needs of the Divisions.
- Provides leadership and communication to assist Divisions in identifying solutions and assisting with the achievement of strategic objectives and goals.
- Provides legal advice to Divisions with the goal of continuous improvement at the City of Saskatoon.
- Performs a complete range of municipal and corporate legal services, including bylaw enforcement, labour law, contracts, planning and development law, litigation and legislative drafting.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Degree from an accredited school of law.
- Membership, or eligibility for membership, in the Law Society of Saskatchewan.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices and objectives of providing legal services to a municipal corporation would be an asset.
- Knowledge of applicable Provincial legislation and regulations pertaining to municipal bylaws and a municipal corporation would be an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems and manage conflicts in a positive and timely manner.
- Demonstrated ability to make clear decisions in a prompt and consistent manner.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise a high degree of confidentiality and trust.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, the legal industry, various professionals and civic officials.
- Ability to work as a member of an office team with minimal supervision.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to deal courteously, tactfully and effectively with customers.
- Demonstrated research and presentation skills.
- Skill in analyzing, evaluating and organizing facts, evidence and precedents; and in devising solutions to legal problems unique to municipal government.
