Join the City Operations team within Parks and Roads Services and take on a critical dual classification role as a Labourer 2/Truck Driver 3. This position is vital to maintaining our city's essential infrastructure year-round. In the summer, you will focus on skilled and unskilled manual labour, supporting programs like Asphalt Road, Sidewalk, and Paving Operations. During the winter, you will primarily function as a Truck Driver 3, leading efforts in District Snow and Ice Control to keep our roads safe and accessible.This unique position balances heavy manual labour and skilled equipment operation to support the Mobility Infrastructure Services section. As a Labourer 2, you will be on the front lines performing asphalt repair and concrete work. As a Truck Driver 3, you will operate tandem dual axle trucks exceeding 13,000 kg gross weight. Successful candidates must demonstrate constant physical effort, operate safely in extreme temperatures, and uphold our core values of professional conduct and asset care.What will you do?Labourer II Summer Activities:
  • Perform skilled and unskilled manual work using hand tools like shovels, rakes, and tampers, as well as power tools
  • Conduct pothole repair, asphalt patching, cold mix repair, and hot crack sealing, which involves handling extremely hot asphalt and asphaltic cement
  • Help with completing concrete repairs, sidewalk washing/sweeping, and operating light delivery vehicles for transporting materials
  • Perform other related duties as required
Truck Driver III Winter Activities:
  • Operate a tandem or single axle sand/plow truck for snow and ice control, including the use of underbody and front-mount plows
  • Participate in Spring Clean up Operations
  • Perform routine maintenance, including cleaning the truck box/sander and executing box and sander changeovers
  • Perform other related work as assigned
Safety and Accountability:
  • Adhere strictly to safety procedures, wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and immediately report all incidents or unsafe conditions
  • Review and comply with Hazard Assessments (HA), Field Level Risk Assessments (FLRA), and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Contribute to a safe workplace and, when required, mentor or train fellow employees on proper safety and equipment usage
  • Complete accurate and timely paperwork, including vehicle inspections and defect sheets
  • Report to work on time and follow proper reporting procedures
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with supervisors and coworkers using two-way radios or cell phones
Qualifications
  • Completion of the tenth (10th) school grade
  • One (1) year of experience operating tandem or single axle sand/plow
  • City Of Edmonton D permit passed
  • City of Edmonton Sander/Plow Trained and Passed
Skills required for success:
  • Help ensure safe road and sidewalk access for community members
  • Engage with the public in a helpful, respectful, and courteous manner while performing duties
  • Perform work that directly impacts the quality and accessibility of City infrastructure used by people daily
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment in a safe manner
  • Ability to detect minor defects in the equipment used
  • Work alongside crew members, attending morning meetings/toolbox talks
  • Provide mentoring and assist with training new staff members
  • Properly use two-way radios or cell phones to communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors
  • Complete all tasks required for thorough vehicle inspections and blade changes
  • Previous experience operating equipment and performing tasks related to asphalt, concrete, and snow removal
  • Familiarity with interpreting and understanding Snow and Ice Control (SNIC) routing maps
  • Basic computer skills (email, Google applications, and data entry)

Conditions of Employment:
  • Valid Alberta Class 3 driver's licence with Q endorsement (air brakes) (or provincial equivalent)
  • Maintaining a City Driver's D permit is a requirement of this position
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and coveralls
  • Possession of current Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED certifications
Work Environment:
  • The role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains
  • This role works primarily in an outdoor setting
  • Exposure to environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, inclement weather, dust, poor air quality, noise, light variation, vibrations, chemicals, animals, and exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards may occur
  • This role requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, lifting items up to 50 pounds, pushing, pulling, reaching, using feet/hand control requiring physical stamina and resilience
  • Working at heights
  • Weekend and Night work Mandatory
  • Ability to work 12 hr Rotating Shift (winter)
  • Ability to Work 10 hr days (Summer)
  • Placement will be based on operational need, city-wide

Salary Range:
  • Labourer II: $34.209 (Hourly); $71,428.39 (Annually)
