Join a team that has the environment down to a science.Your OpportunityWe are currently seeking a talented and ambitious Senior Aquatic Biologist to join our fisheries team in the Calgary, Alberta office. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and leading fisheries related tasks and deliverables for projects associated with a large pipeline client. Opportunity exists to support other sectors and projects; however, the majority of the successful client's effort will be focused on pipeline projects. The successful candidate will join our team of freshwater fisheries and aquatic biologists who value teamwork and will help shape our fisheries practice in Alberta.Your Key ResponsibilitiesIn this role, your key responsibilities will be the following:
  • Serve as the primary resource and contact for clients.
  • Manage, plan and lead freshwater fisheries programs. (fish, fish habitat and water quality)
  • Understand recent and existing practices and techniques for sampling and analysis of fisheries, habitat and water data from streams, rivers, and lakes.
  • Coordinate and oversee field programs.
  • Manage tasks and projects according to approved scopes of work, and deliver quality reports on schedule and within budget.
  • Provide senior review for a variety of reports.
  • Develop and maintain positive client and regulatory contacts.
  • Provide understanding of project goals and sound environmental project advise to clients.
  • Contribute to the professional development of junior environmental staff through training, technical direction, and mentorship.
  • Contribute to proposals and other business development activities.
  • Serve as interdisciplinary liaison within Stantec
  • Embrace and promote Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all work.
  • Travel is required throughout Western Canada for projects, client liaison and business development.
QualificationsYour Capabilities and CredentialsThe successful candidate will possess the following:
  • Proven technical, communication, writing and organization skills.
  • Ability to maintain flexibility, meet deadlines in a dynamic environment, and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience in developing field programs and methods to meet specific project objectives.
  • Experience in leading field crews in execution of fish and fish habitat field programs, and leading staff in data management, data analysis and report preparation.
  • Experience in HSSE guidelines for all work.
  • Experience in construction monitoring and environmental management planning.
  • Strong project management and senior technical review skills.
  • Experience in business development, working with and advising clients, and proposal writing.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Experience with mentoring and training environmental staff.
Education and Experience
  • A Bachelor's degree in Biology or Fisheries is required, graduate degree preferred.
  • Registered Professional Biologist or Technologist accreditation required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience as a fisheries biologist with consulting experience.
  • Knowledge of current provincial and federal government regulatory requirements and regulatory authorities. (e.g., Canada Energy Regulator, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, etc.)
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
